Silent Hill

Post by Kashluk »

Ok, I've been starting these game topics a lot lately, but I think just one more won't hurt...

Ok, so here's the deal: I just completed SH2 but throughout the game I never had ANY idea what it was all about. So this guy is wheeping in front of a mirror and suddenly is blown to this ghost town filled with zombies. Why it's deserted, why are there such zombies, why is the guy there?? I never figured it out even after finishing the main scenario AND the sub-scenario, both once (I've still got the rest of the endings to see).

So can someone enlighten me about the backgrounds of this Silent Hill place? Is it some kind of a nightmare thingy inside the people's head? Or is it just a normal town, but the people are insane so they hallucinate or something? I really really don't get it. And no, I haven't played SH1 or SH3.

The only good thing about Resident Evil - series was that you knew *exactly* what was going on, why you were there and what was happening. Silent Hill just seems... too surrealistic for my taste - unless someone can explain me what the place is all about.

*Spoilers ahead on both the first and second game, don't read unless you want to*

Heres the thing, the Silent Hill series is about differant things that no one has yet to explain. Each time the characters, the evil behind the town, etc are allitle differant, so its hard to explain. Its surrealisitic because its designed that way. In the first game you play Harry who goes to town on vacation with his daughter. He gets into some sort of car accident and his daughter goes missing. From there its one large weird plot as you uncover hidden voodoo and a drug plot. In SH 2 you play James who went to town because he received a letter from his dead wife. Generally when you receive stuff from dead people, you wanna investigate, so there James goes. I can't remember the exact plot details as to why stuff happens, but yea. You just beat it, form a conclusion. Really there IS no way to positively explain WHY weird things happen in Silent Hill. As proven by the fact that multiple people have these delusions, their not confined to one person. In my HONEST opinion? Silent Hill is a living entity itself. The town is alive. It'de explain how it changes from game to game, why the townsfolk are possessed etc. If you notice, its always a visitor to silent hill who is the hero, because he somehow has a connection with the town that the town doesn't like. Etc. Anyways, thats my 2 bits. Silent Hill always interests me because its open ended interms of thinking out the plot. Gamefaqs has alot of good plot information that I can't provide, etc. Cheers.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought already. There are just soooo many weird things in that town, like these huge walls made from iron pipes and weird textiles that cut the town into smaller areas, roads that lead nowhere, people (or their clones) who don't exist or have died and stuff... It's weird. Too weird.

They're making Silent Hill 4. From what I've read the hero locks himself in a room for a few weeks then one day travels through a mirror into silent hill or something.

Yeah, it's a weird game. The town is a different place for different people. It was the vessel of torment for James, a place for him to atone for what he perceived as his sins. Silent Hill 3 explains the origins of the town a little better than the other 2.

What? Silent Hill 4. Can't wait. I'm going to look up as much news about this as I can, after work.

Way I remember it was he traveled through a cave or closet or something. Anyways should prove interesting because you return back to the apartment often to "recover your sanity". Also interesting is that while in your apartment, the game becomes First Person. So that should atleast provide some interest if Konami can do some neat things with it (They generally never dissapoint interms of "neat things"). Atleast the hero isn't allitle 15 year old girl this time?

Still plenty of weird shit though.

Hmm just remembering something from an interview that might help Kash. Silent Hill is supposed to represent the typical American quiet town, but with a darker secret. I'll probably recheck my interviews sometime this weekend, see if I can dig up more. I like the Silent Hill games alot because their more scary instead of "OH SHIT! A DOG JUMPED THROUGH THE WINDOW!" tactics that Capcom likes using.

I thought the top model was real for a second. Silent Hill always kinda sounded cool with wierd stories and spooky things, but I never tried them out.

Their real good compared to other Survival Horror games. Their real good in the fact that they can actually scare you because of the mix of sound/visuals and plotline. I remember the first time playing the original Silent Hill (still my favorite) and suddenly the analog controller mimiced a heart beat. The pure atmosphere of the games are what make it real good. Gameplay wise, their very similar to their Resident Evil cousins with afew exceptions. First is that it has abit more focus on melee combat, mostly because you're not just stuck with a dinky little combat knife. Next is that sound and lighting pay a very important part. Your stuck with a little radio that for some odd reason gives static when monsters are around, and a small light which is mostly your only way of seeing. Infact, don't expect to see much of anything because theres alot of heavy filters in there to distory sight along with all the fog and darkness. The series is one of the few I suggest to most console gamers.

*edit* I added another screenshot of the character with ingame graphics. This is an early model so ugh, expect it to only get better.

Really, to play the third, you should at least play the first, as it's a direct sequel, unlike the second which has really little to do with the first.

MORE (if it's possible) SPOILERS

Playing the sub-scenario of Silent Hill 2 proved out to be more disturbing than the default scenario. So I'm running errands for this guy called Ernest in a big spooky house filled with these zombies. Ernest is always behind doors, first it's a study and later on it's a bedroom. He's weird, hermit kind of a guy, who griefs for his daughter who died 10 years ago at age of 7. He hasn't left the house since and every single item in the children's room etc. is in it's place.... mostly. But some of the stuff are moving. And you can hear small steps running around and child's giggle and stuff. Wick-ed.

And so, I find out that Ernest has been doing a research on resurrecting the dead but he's missing one thing before he could accomplish this. And this is what you're sent after to the neighboring apartments and when you find it and bring it back, the door (through which Ernest talked to you earlier) is no longer locked. You can chit-chat with Ernest a bit and then the main char tries to open the door... Wickedy wickedy bam-bam, there's only a small table with books on it. Nothing else. No other furniture, no bed, no Ernest. It's fucking empty. And that's it. You just walk away thinking of suicide. Plus you still hear the child's giggle.

No you can't, it suxors. Don't know if you'll be able to do it with the hard drive though. My guess is that the formatting is differant or something? On a ps1 memory card you had "Block" (like 4KB each?) and on the PS2 you run off of KB.

SH1 is available for PC? I never found it.
