Dune Reference?

Post by Ernesto »

I've noticed a similarity between the Mentats of Dune and the stat boosting drug.

Mentats were the imperial citizens trained for supreme accomplishments of logic. "Human computers." Dem smart folk, hyuck?

Now, everyone's favourite drug boosted Int by 2, Per by 1 and I do believe charisma.

Does anyone know if this is just a conicidence or a actual reference?

It's an actual reference, I don't know where I saw it but I remeber someone saying that it was intentional, what else are you going to call them? Smart Pills? Dumb-Off? It could also be a play on Mentos at the same time, because, obviously, little mints make you smarter.

Mint is addictive, albeit mildly. I used to be addicted. I would buy a 24 pack of altoids at costco and go through them in like 2 days.

Still, they taste good, they're cheap, they make your breath smell nice, and anyway I'm just glad I'm not addicted to alcohol, cigarettes, or worse.

You know why you didn't notice it? Because you had a cigarette in your mouth, a beer in one hand and your pecker in the other.

When I first played it I noticed it right off. I saw them in the invintory and I said,"Mentats, what do those do?"and my freind said,"those make you smarter." Then I said,"So they make you a Mentat." And he said,"Yeah, they make you a Mentat,"

Good times really.

i doubt mentat was a refrence to dune, although i do feel that one of the fallouts should have mentioned such a well written series.

In Dune, I the "human computers" were called Mentats, and this is what one of them says during the movie when he is taking his smart drugs.

"It is by will alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho that thoughts aquire speed. The lips aquire stain, the stain becomes a warning, it is by will alone I set my mind in motion."
(just because I liked that movie because it was so wierd-- I am aware that it was origionally a book)

or you could just say that mentos ~ mentats. (both are probably references)

Was there drugs that the Mentats took in the book? I remember there were in the movie, and I believe that there were none in the book.

Sapho juice, yes. It's later referenced by Herbret (In Messiah, I believe) in the drugging of the daughter of a Fremen Fedaykin. But it doesn't make you smarter, it enhances concentration to the trained. Untrained are drugged into numbness by it.

But then, there's so much bullshit in Frank's books I wondered if he made stuff like the Spice trance up while being in a little purple haze frenzy himself.

I do believe the Mentats in Fallout are a reference to Dune, and I seem to remember this was confirmed by someone who worked on the game.

Sooo...
Now we know how to seperate the fallout players with the fallout fanatics. When asked about mentats, they will likely say "oh, Mentos!" when infact the fanatic would say "oh, Dune!"

heheh.
