Mothership Zeta: The End?

Post by King of Creation »

[ Game -> Editorial ]

The folks over at Crispy Gamer dropped by to let us know about an article they're written concerning "the end" of Fallout 3. They feel that Mothership Zeta is the true ending to the game. Here are some highlights:

Our culture has come to expect a lot from endings. We expect epic
scale, punishing challenges, and seriousness. On the face of it, Zeta
ticks none of those boxes. It's a pulpy rehash of the familiar
alien-abduction standard. You're sucked onto a ship by a tractor beam.
You're poked and prodded with sharp instruments. You're thrown into a
holding cell with a stranger, and somehow, some way, you have got to
get out of there. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

...

Endings are subjective in Fallout 3. For me, Mothership Zeta is a fitting finale, not because it's so sweeping or bombastic (it's not), but because Zeta evoked something new in me. Specifically, it brought out my worst, and I'm grateful for it. My Fallout 3 experience has been peppered with little moments of insight into the human condition, and it was a pleasant surprise that Zeta was able to give this Lone Wanderer one final epiphany.

I haven't even finished Fallout 3, mind you, but how can a DLC that has nothing to do with Fallout seem like the end of the game? It's like playing Red Alert and then Quake and feeling satisfied that the death of Shub Niggurath was a fitting end to the Soviets.

Thanks to James for the heads-up.

why consider an editorial on another site as relative towards 'fact? IT BROUGHT OUT MY WORST. you cant consider art as pure art any more if you hand money over for it, it is driven by it. you are handing the cigartette to a cancer patient, you cunt. zeta may be a possible end to the milking' most dlcs cant go so far? can they i havent been in the loop but

once a series goes into space, it's fucked

Very much the equivalent of jumping the shark in television.

Visually, the ending of Zeta is neat. It's probably the biggest graphics spectacle in the game, and the fight itself is fun.

However, the lead up makes not a lick of sense, and what happens after storywise evokes nothing - the survivors decide to stay on the ship and you go traipsing back to the wasteland. And you do so with an obscene amount of alien technology that people are willing to throw down huge money for without even questioning it's authenticity. I say that because while the weapons are functional, you'd be nuts to sell ammo for them to random wastelanders because the ammo is rather sparse once you get off the ship.

They did a decent job of making you dislike the aliens, but instead of giving them more depth it just gives them more validity as walking targets.

Fallout 3 ended for me in some generic ant cave so I don't know what they're talking about.

Well, it ended for me in Broken Steel when for some reason it turned into a mass shoot out in a military complex that just did not fit in a post apocalyptic warzone.

As for the end? It's probably the end of Fallout 3. Who cares anyway, I hope everyone dies. That's how that game maks me feel. Fuck em. I have hopes for New Vegas, other than than, I hope they all drown.

This addon sucked mega fucking ass. You run around blasting aliens and their toys while picking up an endless supply of their shitty rifles and those fucking crystals, what is the deal with that? And in the end you battle a space ship. Wooptee fucking doo, not even the recordings from previously abducted people was good.

A total garbage fucking game, fuck you Bethesda!
