Apperently he did it because as a boy he molested two of relatives. He told his wife he was haunted by nightmares of doing it again and was planning this shooting for a week. He bought with him lube, flexible plastic ties, and dead bolts or something so the current speculation was he was gonna rape himself some amish girls and THEN kill himself.

He thought he could turn it into a standoff and use that time productively.

The cops didn't retreat fast enough, so he just skipped to the kill and suicide part of the plan.
