More computer stuff

Please recommend me the best processor temperature, ram-cleaner, firewall and antivirus software! Freeware and linkety-link, if possible. I haven't had any good ones in the former two, but with the latter I've come to appreciate Zonealarm Personal and Anti-Vir XP, if you've experienced better ones, please inform me.

Any tips would be great. Thanks in advance.

No need to use a virus scanner or a software firewall, they don't help, anyway. Use a hardware router maybe, if you really want to spend money on something like that.

Apart from that use a good internet browser like Mozilla (Firefox) and use your brain, that should suffice.

If you CPU is above 235 degrees celcius, then you're screwed.

Seriously though, I have no idea, my CPU gives out in this heat, and it fucking sucks..!

I use Norton anti-virus and I think it duly meets the requirements that apply to av software.

I suppose that by ''Ram-cleaner'' you mean optimization software that allows you to manually free a set amount of available ram? If so, i recommend trying ''Tuneup utilities 2004''. It's what i am using at the moment, and until now it has proven to be quite satisfactory. In addition it offers a wide array of other system maintenance utilities.
I'm not sure if it's freeware though. If not there's always the option of applying an illegally obtained registration key.

Well I could always warez some shit, but I'm not that interested in it at the moment... nor do I have the money. Besides, I've had some bad experiences on Norton (warez) in the past, so I'm not that willing to try it anytime soon... If I'll go the illegal route, I'll pick F-Secure if anything.

I'll take a look around for the "Tuneup Utilities" and see if they're any good. I've had several RAM-cleaners in the past and most of them were just plain shit.

I think I'll give Sygate firewall a try this time... Kerio and Zonealarm were ok, but nothing special and at least Zonealarm's personal edition was pretty limited when it came to fucking arond with the settings.

@Smiley: I've got a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, and if hot is hot, that CPU is like omg superhot.
I'm just interested in seeing how much heat it actually generates.

Mine runs at 71 F in winter and up to 89 F in summer.

As for RAM cleaners, why do you need this kind of stuff

Yes, Sygate firewall is pretty decent. As for virusscanners, I always use AVG free edition.

For temperature monitoring check out Speedfan.

hm. Depending on what motherboard you have you can either download a program from their site with the function of reading your heat, or you already have received one, but haven't used it yet. There are several programs out there that can read it for you, if they support your brand of MB. It's far from guaranteed that it will support though...

Hardware wise I guess if you have a wire-thermo, then you can put it directly between the fan and on the CPU, but I wouldn't advise that for obvious reasons.. still some have managed this. Note that more likely than not it will severely damage your thermometer if you leave it there indefinately..

what can I use to cut and paste from video files? preferably with the sound optional and shit.

Basically I want to record some shit off a dvd onto my computer and then edit the sound and mabye mix insert it before some other video files. Like the Sound recorder that comes with windows, but movies. Recording from avis would be good to. I have a feeling I'll need a capture card though.

Adobe makes ridiculously expensive software that an amateur director friend of mine swears by. I can't quite remember what it's called, but Adobe can't make that many video editing suites.

I actually found some Asus MB/CPU Probe software, which works pretty well. 56 C, not bad, it's less than I thought it would be.
