MW 1 was too early, but interesting. Full d/l available.

MW 2 was really great for 1995. Many versions need "ATI 3D rage" so you probably can't run those. You can still listen to the new age/light techno/vaguely classical soundtrack as a regular CD- just skip track 1. Good for road trips if in just the right mood. Or to replace soundtrack of a game that has a shitty one.
Still darn good, and has some complicated Mech Bay tradeoffs.

MW3 is more advanced. Not just graphics, but gameplay/etc.

MW 4 is simplified MW3. With updated graphics.

Go for MW 3.

How nice, another 'plz hlep giz modm doznt werk cant fawm opizins cant desid abut gaemz evn tho im postin on formz nd stuf plz hel -' topic.

One was practically an adventure game. Quite amusing, for the time.

Rough Hierarchy of Woo

2 > mercenaries > other expansions > 3 + expansion(s) > 4 - mercenaries > 4 expansion(s) > 4.

Mercenaries for 2 was brilliant (back in 1997 or so), mercenaries for 4 was merely amusing. Shiny and streamlined. Vengeance is shite. Whether my opinion was coloured more by the gameplay itself or the scant few minutes of woeful 'acting' I endured I do not know. If multiplayer is the focus, get the reimagining of mercenaries and Mech Pak. Decent modding work and still a fairly active community. Otherwise, echo I, try 3 and perhaps consider 2 if you enjoy the experience. :drunk:

Just shoot the legs.

From a distance.

Spin your torso backwards.

Use rear view camera to navigate.

Run away fast.

Why be fair?

I reckon that MW3 is the way to go, although MW2 would probably serve you just as well if you're not too fussed about graphics.
"When conversing about oligarchy, you must consider this point: Many children are taught from an early age that monarchies are primarily benevolent, and are given very little to discourage this opinion until at least adolesence. Even more prevalent are stories about the supposed benevolence of heirs to the throne, symbolising a cycle which they are taught is good."

I always thought Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries was the best, but I guess I just have a hard on for that time period of Inner Sphere mechs as it was the only time period I really played the table top game in. Mechwarrior 3 is probably the best interms of compromising graphics, mission selection and gameplay. MW 4 was designed for the X-Box wasn't it?Sso I'd avoid it like the plague.

I share your pain. :emo:

Thanks for the replies, mangs and BLARGH. I'm going for 3 and maybe Mercs 4 if I enjoy 3. Never miss an active gaming community. :neverforget:

I don't think I can cope with Mech2's ugliness, sadly.

MW4 was a PC only. You're thinking of MechAssault.

Regardless MechCommander Gold is awesome.

HOW, BY ALL THATS GINGER AND INCONSOLABLE, COULD I HAVE (even momentarily) FORGOTTEN MECHCOMMANDER GOLD ?

Oh, wait, because the only difference worth mentioning between Mechcommander Gold and Mechcommander 2 is the issue of the former being considerably less awful than the latter. Your results which vary are broken, of course.

MW2 was pretty awesome to my 11 year-old brain. I'm sure it's still fun to play.

MechCommander 2 was rat shit, and the first one's biggest downfall was the lack of hardpoint restrictions other then weight.

Still, the original mech commander is pretty fun....you know, aside from being able to put in a kajillion lasers onto one heavy mech simply because they fit within the weight limit.

I used to play mechwarrior 2 but i think I sucked at it fairly well. I probably didn't get the mechanics of the game but you would shoot at the guy until you overheated then shoot some more and repeat.
