I think a turn-based RPG in third-person view (or even first-person) could work very well with an adjustable camera, good combat animations, and smooth transitions.
I'm actually very fond of what they did witht the graphics in Tactics, they had the flair and feel of the first two games with a good looking facelift. I do think that the engine lacked diversity and proper color toning and it was fairly buggy; but it holds up well, even today. If I had anything to say about it I'd tell Bethesda to go with an upgraded version of that.
Unfortunately I don't have any room to say such a thing, and I will just say right now that the one thing I am not worried about when it comes to Fallout 3 is the graphics engine.
Fuck the graphics engine, who gives a rats ass about soil erosion at work on the radiated parts of the body? What I've still to see, and perhaps never will during my lifetime, is a complete and accurate animations system. Why the focus on bumps, when there are over a billion graphic features that hardly take a byte more out of the system, while making the game original and beautiful?
One can sample such a . . . unique experience, even now, VasikkA. Patience unnecessary, maddening leaps of innovation superfluous.
Gouge free the eyes, and play any of the software currently available. An aural experience unlike many others. Or so they say. With the advent of personal discipline, a blindfold might suffice. If one is cut from craven stock. If one happens to be deaf, one can only surmise one held foul grudges of some sort against one. Unfortunate. Yes.
After playing Company of Heroes with a top spec system, I would love fallout 3 to look like that. It has the isometric view point and i know its a RTS not a cRPG but thats just a case of building new mechanics. If you play it with full graphics settings, the crumbling bombed out french villages are dripping with atmosphere.
I'm sure with a bit of tinkering SPECIAL could work with a modified version of that engine. But graphics alone will only go a very short distance to making a modern fallout game good.
Only down side is all those people who haven't owned a pc game since the original will need to re-mortgage their house or sell their mac.
