Troika's next project: MMORPG?

Post by Mr. Teatime »

Please, no. You can read an F! True Company Story on Troika, which is basically an interview with Tim Cain and some background on the company. There is mention of Fallout, of course, and the article ends on this note:
“I hope Troika Games continues to make quality role-playing games, possibly expanding to three teams, Cain said.

But most ambitious, he also mentioned venturing into a heavily trodden path, changing it for the better. In short, creating a “true-role playing MMORPG.
This is in line with the rumours I've heard, about Troika expanding the type of games it makes to areas like... shudder... consoles. And now, possibly MMORPGs. I guess it was inevitable, to stay afloat in the games industry these days... :(

MMORPG's are great on paper... it's just when you get a lazy team and a 'pay-to-play' (rather than send in an application to prove you have a brain behind your eyes) that they become the abomination they are.

Neocron remains the best... it's the only one with such a degree of free combat that you can just shoot someone in the eye for annoying you.

suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Play IRC, it's more fun. And sometimes the girls on IRC actually are girls, unlike on MMORPG.

On the internet, gender is a moot point. People who pretend that they're girls are only getting off on themselves, though they should probably be disposed of.

But it's not like it's "Come to IRC, that's where the girls are at." There's Lark and Jennifer and that's it.

Wait a minute--how in the fuck is making an RPG supposed to be the best way to stay afloat in today's game market? It's probably the best way to torpedo your goddamn company.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

Torpedo? Blizzard sold 250,000 copies of WoW on the first day.

The MMORPG market is pretty saturated at the moment. Especially with the releases of WoW and EQ2 now, and the breadth of games cover action heroes, to conventional fantasy gamers, to social players, it will be very difficult to find a good, different and novel concept to base a game on.

And Troika would be appealing to a different fanbase to their standard one with a MMORPG. I doubt many of us here and at RPGCodex would buy it, and most of us are big Troika fans.

Well that's fan-fucking-tastic for Blizzard, cheesedick, but that's Blizzard. You want to see the long list of MMORPGs that tank hard? Only a handful of games really get to be the huge successful publisher's wet dream that EQ or DAOC are. Most are just a gigantic waste of time and money for developers and publishers.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

And they're always a waste of money for the customers.
