The Books thread.

Talk about music, movies, TV, books, other types of entertainment and what your vices are. Also, if you're addicted to the high you get off Aspirin, this is the place to talk about it.

I just started the William Gibson / Bruce Sterling teamup, "The Difference Engine." Indecipherable steampunk alt-history. Pretty good in the first thirty pages.

I've been looking for a hard copy of that book for a while. I've just got a shitty paperback copy somewhere.

Don't laugh because you have horrible taste in fantasy novels.

Go read some Tad Williams and expand your horizons.

Breaking News:

This just in folks. Good taste in Fantasy novels DOES exist! Elves and dwarves are stunned. No word yet as to what the Minotaurs' response will be.

Any good fantasy books with lots of sexual deviance? I'm talking all the perverts and creeps you can imagine.

Reading some Cormac McCarthy for the first time. Pretty wild shit, I must say. Also picked up some Neil Labute, Sam Shephard and David Mamet plays. Exciting, no? Why does this thread exist?

All the post-apoc novels I've read were human-only, except one: Battlefield Shit by Hubbard. Wiki it, man.

Surely you jest? Writers like Robert Jordan and Tad Williams are anathema to readable fantasy, they've been churning out naught but prolix dreck for decades; juvenile fantasy not even fit for dimestore romance novel racks. Cast aside your immense swell guy and seek out the works of writers like R. Scott Bakker, Gene Wolfe, and Mervyn Peake. It's still not literature, but I doubt that the genre will ever come any closer.

I try to stay away from fantasy and if I do read it, I prefer it to be on the lighter side.
Fantasy novels get way too full of themselves the longer the novel/series goes on.

To re-iterate Franz, read Heroes Die.
