MMOGs = Massively Big Suckage?

When Wired posts an article like this telling of the demise of many MMOGs then you have to wonder.

MMO games are notoriously hard to develop, much harder than traditional shrink-wrapped, single-player video games.

And then there is the fact that only one type of online game like "City of Heroes" can be successful. It doesn't say much for the industry that it must limit itself in that way.

MMOs are much more demanding in the financial and technical aspects of the game, compared to singleplayer games.

Your point being?

Massive online RPGs might be challenging financially and technically, but they also tend to suck. And because of the financial challenge (tadÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â¡!) they're expensive, for both the developer and the user. Which means it's over-priced shit. The pretty wrapper won't make it any better either.

Online gaming has one big fucking weak link: the human factor. What I mean? Well, how about things like cheats, hacks, unbalanced teams, pk'ing/tk'ing, stupid wankers on the net playing games for their only joy in their miserable life just to piss you off etc. etc.

see i have this thing against games which are mostly mmorpg because of the fact you pay 80 to buy the game and then you must pay 10-30 JUST to fucking pay the game you JUST fucking bought.

if i buy a fucking game i expect to be able to play it without getting raped by some stupid cost to play it.

its like buying a sandwich at the fucking grocery store then paying to take a bite from it after you just payed for the fucking thing.

That's my thougth. A cost might have been necessary in the early days of MMORPG, and for the beginning of UO. It was new and never done. Now they can plan ahead pretty much everything, and servers don't cost as much as they did 5 years ago, etc.

Just consider EQ. 800 000 users. 10$ a month.

8 000 000 $ a month. Do you think they spend fucking 8 million dollars on developpement and tech support? Do they even continue patching the game?

I didn't mind paying 10$ a month for DAOC when there were only 10 000 users, plus a patch was coming out nearly every day, adding useful balance changes and items, etc.

Obviously, MMORPGs are better in concept than execution. But it's still a very cool concept. It's a new genre, though, so devs just need to get a better handle on it.
