Does anyone know the answer to this?
1,2,3,4......48,49,50,51,52,53......97,98,99,100
Answer=5050
To get this answer you must add 1+2,3+4,5+6......and so on.This would take forever. There is a short way to do this by useing the numbers above.Does anyone know how?

100+1 = 101, 99+2 = 101 also, 98+3 = 101, etc. Obviously you can work this equation out 50 times, each time equaling 101. 101 x 50 = 5050. This is incredibly easy.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Atoga is on the right track. Simply average the lowest number in the range and the highest, then multiply by the number of numbers in the range.
So we have (((1 + 100) /2) x 100)
1 + 100 = 101
101 / 2 = 50.5
50.5 x 100 = 5050
It's useful for doing things like figuring out how many items are stacked in a pyramid where each tier is one less than the next lower level.
And before anyone goes on about how smart anyone is, just remember that Gauss figured this out when he was 6.

OTB - same thing. None of your complex formulae K THX

Hey, if you want to sit down and add 50 pairs of numbers together because you haven't figured out that multiplication is a rapid way of doing repetitive addition, you go right ahead.atoga wrote:OTB - same thing. None of your complex formulae K THX
If you consider that forumula to be "complex" I suggest your dabblings w/mathematics be restricted to criticisms of the paint-by-numbers daubs of school children.
BTW, you're making Robert Hughes cry.

OTB - I'm just saying using a formula is illogical for such a simple problem. There's no repetetive addition here. If I was doing something a lot harder, then I would, but otherwise, it's stupid.

that thing is called tha dope arithmetic sum
Yeah, you're doing the same thing but using an easy formula instead... That's not very "illogical" or "complex" if you ask me. ATOGA = LOSEMegatron wrote:not really? adding every number up might take a bit longer than to write a short formulae that you're basically doing anyway or something.
