The "kilo" in "kilobit per second" stands for
1000, not 1024 as is customary when describing
memory and harddisk size.

I've been broadband since 1998....Went on a dialup for a few months when I lived on my own and got super poor...I've been using the internet since around 93 (when some of you were in in preschool)...I've kept up with the connection trends, and with computers in general...

When a modem has 56K as a label, that stands for the theoretical maximum that the modem can perform. Most dial-ups operate at 10-20% and this is based on compression of the files and transmission line quality. Unless you are the only one using a T1+ connection, you will have to wait for optical modems before a computer's internet connection is the bottleneck of data transfer.

yeah ok
but what i mean is when you divide 56kbps (kilobits per second) by 8 (eight bits in one byte, see) you get the amount of kilobytes (ie the theorethical "download speed",) per second, that's 7 kilobytes per second. It seems that in practice 56k modems aren't usually faster than something like 48kbit though? Like Megatron's connection is 40kbit. some other shit programs probably eat bandwidth too but i dont know much about that i guess

Just type into google "bandwidth speed test" and you should come up a number of them, but of course the distance from the server affects your speed.

(Bandwidth place's server is located in San Antonio Tx, USA)

The number that's printed on the box of your modem, adsl whatever has nothing to do with the actual capacity of the modem/cable whatever. Or, err... well, yes it does, but it isn't the straight amount of SPEED you get when you download shit.

With my 256 / 256 downloading speed is at maximum 28 kb/s.

Way to be on the ball there kashluk! Speed of your connection is measured in bits, download rates are measured in bytes. Read the thread before posting.
