Personally I think the AK-47's simplicity and reliability put it above the M-14.

You've obviously never even touched an M14, and the only experience you've ever had with an AK-47 has been in Counter-Strike.

"The most serious drawback to the AK and AKM is the low muzzle velocity (710 meters per second) of the relatively heavy 7.62-mm round. This results in a looping trajectory that requires a clumsy adjustment for accuracy at ranges beyond 300 meters. The barrel overheats quickly when the weapon fires for extended periods, making the weapon hard to handle and occasionally causing a round to explode prematurely in the chamber. The exposed gas cylinder is easily dented, sometimes causing the weapon to malfunction. "

From my U.S. Army field manual, that right there should tell you something.

I assume you know what you're talking about, seeing how the biggest thing I've shot is a 12 gauge. :)

Well the U.S. Army manuels are probably a bit biased. I mean during the cold war their pamphlets showed AK-47s as the weapons of the enemy. Of course any country's manuals are gonna tell their troops "You have a superior weapon don't worry!".

Never fired either so I don't have any first-hand experence but from what I've seen and read and whatnot, the M-14 is one of the finest battle rifles ever, it has two major drawbacks and one not so major to it, it's heavy and not as easly manufactured as the AK-47, and the round has a lot of umpf to it so on full-auto you'll be shooting above their head, but if you know what you're doing you wont need to use full-auto, the Ak-47 may be reliable but it's nowhere near as accurate as an M-14, but it is light and cheap and an idiot can run it, perfect for the peasnats who made up the bulk of the Soviet army. They're both pretty reliable though, but any firearm will be reliable if you keep it clean and take care of it.

Yah keeping it clean helps but in places like Vietnam during war time you can't really get much equipment or spend much time cleaning your weapon out in the middle of a humid jungle.

That was the problem the A1 had, not the M-14, the M-14 was rather long for the dense jungles and heavy and the wood stock would soak up the moist air causing the stock to warp screwing the accuracy, that can be fixed by putting a fiberglass stock or something similar on there, also cuts doen on the weight.

I don't wish to 'toot my own horn' but I am a gun smith and I understand how these firearms work, what the manual tells you is pretty much spot on. Back to avatars - Viktor come forth and explain yours to all these wonderful people!

Airsoft - You can prevent warping in wooden stocks by using the proper oils too, something every soldier was trained to do.

Keep in mind this is the Army that fielded the M16 as a main battle rifle :?. Besides, Hammer owns a couple himself. I think he'd have a pretty good idea.

A mod split the topic to keep that avatar thread on topic. The mods are placing a special emphasis now on trying to keep things running smoothly. When a thread begins to veer off topic, it gets split. Although, I do believe they're supposed to be leaving notes explaining this.

Thats what I thought. I tried to veer the original board back on topic as did some other people, and it is now on topic.

Mmm... Sexy. The military has a bunch of these surplus rifles, and they're just going to be destroyed :(. They could offer them for a couple hundred and their supply would be gone in a few months.

Yah but with gun regultions and everthing the way they are it would be easier to just destroy them than just sell them for a couple of hundred bucks.

Doesn't the AK-74 use the same (I meant to say similar) ammunition as the M-16 as opposed to the AK-47's "heavy" 7.62-mm round

That's a purdy firearm, too bad they're going to be destroyed, military bus them up, locks them away and then years down the road deems them obsolete and has them destroyed, what a waste, thanks a lot, socialists, if I could I'd give one a good home.

The AK-74 dosn't use the same ammunition as the M-16, it's just similar, I'm quite sure of this but I could be wrong.

No, the 74 uses 5.45x39. It's basically an AK47 case necked down to accept the smaller round. From what I hear, the 5.45 round yaws quite a bit and is actually pretty effective.

FYI, the M16 uses 5.56 NATO. In Vietnam, they used .223 Remington which had a tendency to tumble and fragment quite a bit making it a pretty effective round, too. However, the NATO round is heavier and doesn't tumble so much. It's pure penetration.

No subtlety, OTB. Accountability is king!

As for me, I am a) Canadian, so I donn't have any kind of experience firing weapons, b) French so I wouldn't know anything about it anyways and c) Irish, so I would have a natural predilection for putting C4 in Margaret Thatcher's hotel room. Although, frankly, I do wonder why they even bothered trying to kill Maggie. No mortal weapons can kill a monster from the Underworld.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

I'm French and Irish but American so I own firearms, of course the French and the Irish bloodlines mix funny, on the Irish side I'll run my mouth off and challenge the guy and then when he accepts I get down and beg for my life, and I smell funny too, and I'm not as big a fan of the bombs as I should, and I don't drink.
