Dune

Post by Silver »

I've heard their are series of Dune comming? I looked some on the net, but couldn't find anything good.

I live in Europe, and chances it will come to holland are slim. If the series are out yet, are they for sale on DVD?

Anybody knows?

Thanks anyways...

Well there were series on US television if those are what you meant. And you can buy them on DVD. I picked them up at the Free Record Shop for 20 Euros. Made by William Hurt.

But they don' t seem to be the only one. Apparantly there are various tv miniseries.

There was the first David Lynch movie (that piece of shit...) and then there were two Dune miniseries on scifi. Dune, and Children of Dune, which combined Dune Messiah and Children of Dune into one thing. Haven't seen the second one... the first one was so-so... seems like they ran out of money towards the end because it was all set up like a play... using funny colored lights for special effects. Bleh. Both are available in the US on DVD too... donno about in the UK.

It butchered the whole fucking story, it's a disgrace to the book real hard. What the hell is the "wierding module"? I don't remember reading that in the book. I don't remember Paul becoming able to make people split open like a potato in a microwave with his mind in the book.
And that look that Leto gives him when he's talking to him on Caladan, that was NOT fatherly love... that was fucking "I wanna get in your pants, my son." Grr.
However, I will give you the fact that visually, the movie was quite impressive. It just took far too many liberties with the actual story for me.

You're never gonna find a movie based on a book 100% accurate.

People who always say "The book was sooooooo much better!!!1111!" can cry me a fuckin river.

The book was so much better, that's the thing. Was there a reason for them to change what they did in the story? No, not really. That's why I don't like the movie. Dune happens to be my favourite book, so it's only natural that I'd not want to see it changed pointlessley, just as a lot of people on this forum don't want to see fallout changed pointlessley. It's no different.

Still, David Lynch did a better job with less tech than those dick-heads that made the new Dune and Children of Dune!

David Lynch was just the wrong director for the story. What's more, the original director's cut is something like 6 hours long. This is a story that should be divided into two movies in the least.

Lynch is still brilliant.
I'll get you, Yoshimi.

Yes, they should have made it into at least two movies, probably more like a trilogy. That is assuming that they should have made a movie out of Dune at all.

The problem isn't just the usual "but the book was sooo much better than the movie", but rather that a fictitious setting and history like that found in Dune doesn't translate well at all to a couple of hours of visual story-telling. At least not without having people giving long-winded speeches each and every time something's about to happen so that the uninitiated will have some clue as to the who/what/where/when/why/how of the matter.

I remember growing up back in the dark ages of cinema, long before CGI when I thought that it would be great if special effects would come far enough along to allow things like Dune, Starship Troopers, The Lord of the Rings, etc., to be made into movies worthy of the books. Well, we're at that point technologically, however, I really have to say that this boon has been rather disappointing...

1.) The book is a masterpiece. It's one of the greatest Science Fiction classics of all time.
2.) The movie sucks.
3.) The book is soooooo much better.

Does this sound familiar? It should, since we've been saying it since FOT came out, except replace book with Fallout, movie with Tactics etc.

That's all opinion. Some people prefer the book, others prefer the movie. Learn to accept it and you'll live a longer, healthier life :P

The movie does suck though - why would anyone prefer it over anything?
