other solution for win2k (and any older game besides fallout)

--> NOTE: the command to enable slayerui.dll was written incorrectly, so if you tried this before without any luck, try it again (copy/paste) because I messed up the first time. Sorry for the inconveniance.

Step #1: Enable Compatibility-Mode support for Win2K (which is disabled by default).
Log on as Administrator or equivalent
Click on Start
Click on Run
Type "regsvr 32%systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll" (without the quotes)
Click Ok
There should be a Dialog Prompt saying that slayerui.dll has been successfully enabled.

Step #2: make a shortcut to setup.exe from the fallout CD
Right Click on that shortcut
Click on Properties
You should see a Compatibility tab
Check Run in compatibility mode box
Under that checkbox, choose Windows 98 Compatibility (or 95)
Click on Apply
Click on Ok.

Step #3: now, run that setup.exe shortcut you made.
voila! you can instal fallout like normal on your win2k machine, no manual install for you!
but you must make a shortcut to falloutw.exe and run that in win98 compatibility mode, if you use the actual falloutw.exe, it will not work.

(i am pretty sure this wont mess up your machine, but dont blame me if it does!)

Some hard drives will fuck up the installation so you have to copy the files manually.

I tried moving it from this computer to my dad's computer and it gave me the same error, with a 40 gig hard drive.

What I did was just copy the game to CD then move them to his computer. What's the solution to that bastard?

Oh yeah, both computers are running XP Pro.

I don't have XP, so the only thing I can think of is to check, and if you aren't already, try using the Compatibility Mode option.

Fallout 2 installs & runs just fine on Win2000... Delete this if it's of no use.

I'd just copy the whole game to your HD then doing the desribed process here http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=1593

Nope, didn't work, how big is Fallout supposed to be anyway? I think I might be missing a file or something.

About 550 megs i think.

I'm using XP, and have so far had no trouble with FO2. Maybe fallout2.cfg is screwed, don't know if that has any effect on anything.

I knew something must be wrong, because I look at the Fallout folder and it says 447MB. See I no longer have the Fallout CD, I've bought the fucking game twice already. I've got a zipped file of it, but it's like 920MB (yes, I downloaded this fucking thing, even on cable it was like watching paint dry, but not as fun since there were no mind numbing fumes to inhale) As near as I can tell there are two of everything. Looks a little something like this, There's a Fallout folder that weighs in at 544MB, in the Fallout folder there are the Critter file and Master file, along with all the other files you will find normally, the Falloutw file does not work in here, then inside this folder there is another one called Fallout, in here it has everything that the first one had, but it's only 447MB, and works. I don't know how I got it to work, and I'm running out of CD-R's. I think I'll try moving the 544MB folder onto the other computer.

If you ever get the 20mb error, just make a shortcut to falloutw.exe and run it in win98 compatibility... it should work without needing to reinstall.
Changing the "free space" value in the fallout.cfg to Zero is a good idea too.

Speaking of which. In XP the end movies of both games have problems, they go fast-forward and barely allow to see the content. It also messes audio on that very location, by just playing half of one audio file, then ignoring it.

Is there some workaround this?

Try searching around both here and @ NMA. I think it had a pretty simple solution.

I thought that the video in XP problem had no solution... along with walking too fast on the worldmap (I guess you could get a CPU killer for that though).

The 'walking too fast' is no problem, right?
You just move fast, it's not like it's a big loss or anything to move slowly?

And the video problem had an answer IIRC. But having not been introduced to XP-gaming, I remember nothing about the details.

When you go insanely fast in the world map you almost never get any random encounters. If you walk real slow you get TONS (I know this one from experience... it took a little under an hour to get from the den to Gecko until I got the car)
off topic? OMG YOU'VE BEEN CENSORED... yet you're still posting. MYSTARY!!!!

I've got a problem. Today I installed FO1 for the first time in about 2 years on WinXP. It installed fine, and it runs fine except for one problem: The screen goes black every few seconds. I move the PC around, and the screen comes back, but then it goes black again. The game's not crashing...The screen just goes black, and only refreshes when I move my mouse or the PC.

I've got it running in compatibility mode for Win95..Tried Win98..Even Tried Win2k. Same problem.

Ideas?
