BANDITS demo released

Post by Saint_Proverbius »

[ -> Update]

For those of you Mad Max fans who like the idea of post apocalyptic car battles, there's a new game in the works called BANDITS.
The wastelands stretch out for hundreds of miles and small villages and communities are evenly spread around waterholes and oilfields. There is, however, one major city, Jericho City. Behind Jericho's thick concrete walls and fortifications thrives a powerful elite.

In these lands bandit gangs riding custom built battle cars fight over territories and plunder trade caravans.
You can now get a demo of this game from 3D Gamers, FileShack, and <A href="http://www.fileplanet.com/files/110000/ ... >.
This was spotted at Blue's News.

It's interesting at least. Pretty nifty for a car battle game.

I dunno, after playing and liking I'76 (and not it's expansion nor sequel), and then trying bandits... It simply doesn't feel right... The controls are horrible.

I'll give it another spin later on and maybe lower the quality to get better FPS on my old machine in hopes it helps...

[edit]
I just did and the controls are still just as horrible...

Try hitting the TAB key. That unlocks the turret control from steering.

Ooooh! well crap I missed that. I pressed the tab key a few times (wanting some kind of map :P) That migth explain why I was kind "jumping" around why I pressed tab since the steering went back to follow the turret.

Of course I deleted the download and uninstalled the game. I don't know, the whole part where you cross the gate and find this kinda "boss" after the gate kinda threw me off. That and the "bonuses" you find on the ground...

I liked the comment about "going to the outback" or whatever... Sets the mad max mood, even though the cars didn't, nor the music.

Damn my 56k modem once again. I can't dl 130mb. I'll just wait until I get it on a demo disc.

Or I could wait until some reviews come out and get the full game.

I-76 was the ultimate post-apoc car game. It's hard to match the quality of that game.

From where I lie
The oceans are deep and dry
Empty
The sky is black smoke bearing winter's frozen gifts
It will snow in this land for a thousand years
And I will sleep under it...forever

Yup... it was versatile (you could tweek your car), had a nice story - yet simple. The graphics were simple, but had a LOT of style (goes to show you you don't need "neat particle effects" to make a great game).

it's sequel, of course sucked real badly...

One of the stupid things about bandits is in fact one of it's tips:
"Don't worry about hitting friendly units as friendly fire is ignored" or somesuch. (To note that there are no friendly units in the demo :P) To me that's saying "Listen, you don't need to think dude, just SHOOT EVERYTHING THAT'S MOVING!@!@"... I hate that. It ruins gameplay (for me, obviously some people like it though) I mean come on, people can take their friend/foe into account, and if not give hints (like reticles or something)... I'76 had friendly fire and it was great... Not to mention the great one liners it could spawn :)

I loved I-76.. Right up until I hit the racing mission. I DO NOT WANT TO RACE. I WANT TO KILL.

Other than that one, I loved the game.

One thing about Bandits I don't like is that the cars can't climb very well. I'd much rather be able to climb hills in my dune buggy tank than be stuck fighting in the mostly flat valleys of the map. Then again, I was hoping for something similar to BattleZone style fighting, so I went in to it with a similar expectation.

Good demo. Had fun with it once I learned the controls. The best post apoc racing games so far is still the Carmageddon series.

The reason the cars can't climb any hills is that unlike I'76 the game wasn't designed for you to move all around the world... You're to follow the preset path (and well, as you've noticed there's no real map with the stupid thing and it's easy to get lost, so it's a good thing you can't really stray from the path... Not that it's a good thing there's no map...)

The physics also handle like crap if you ask me. Specially looking at the eneemies kinda tumbling over. Which actually brings another suckyness to the front: the AI...

I mean tweak the difficulty and instead of having harder opponents you just have less armour...

Although I found the environment and such great and cool looking, once I actually got in the game and started to play, my high hopes of this game ever being worth keeping on my hard drive fell down to next to nothing.

Hmm, well, I dunno, all I saw personally were hills... and dunes...

I first tried the game in "full detail" but that was too slow, so I turned evrything down. And well, it didn't look that great anymore now did it :P A game should keep being fun regardless of out it looks. I still enjoy my good games on the NES, why is it that I don't enjoy games that look bad on the PC... Because they're fun is purely visual, and if that's taken away, well, you don't have much left...

Although when I played it in full detail, I didn't notice anything which looked "much better".
