John Gacy wasn't the smartest serial killer, but somehow he still holds the record for the highest kill count. Deceptive doesn't take smart, in fact, if they are too smart they'll see through their own self denial faster. I knew a guy that claimed to be my friend, he was a pathological liar. Could not tell the truth, ever. He stole multiple items from me, when he was confronted with the truth he feigned anger. Scary stuff.

In my experience, deception isn't a monolith. There are many approaches and techniques, and it does take a certain intellectual prowess to both keep track of all the threads and not stumble over them. Might be that this quality isn't functionally synonymous with being conventionally brilliant, might not.

I'd wager there are killers who've both exceeded Gacy's tally, and either they or the full scope of their actions remained unknown.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. I mean combining the simplicity and the whimsy of MLP with the dark humor and atmosphere of Fallout seemed like a pretty obvious thing to me.
