Layoffs Hit Obsidian

Post by POOPERSCOOPER »

[ Company -> Update ]

Obsidian, the developer we all know, has had some lay offs and I guess it's pretty common over there because some are saying that this is the 8th layoff thing.

It seems that some layoffs have hit Obsidian Entertainment, according to the Twitter feeds of ex-staff saying they've been let go. Akil Hooper tweets: "11 years, nearly a dozen shipped titles, Designer, Lead, Producer. 1 cancelled game, survived 7 layoffs, 8th got me. Not a bad track record." QA tester Ashley Betters tweets: "No longer work at Obsidian. I guess this means I will have to start buying my own pens." A tweet from Justin Reynard offers sympathies: "Today marks my 3 year anniversary working at Obsidian Entertainment. To my coworkers (and sadly the ones we've lost) you guys are amazing.<3" Producer Jason Fader adds, simply: "*sigh*." A post on the Obsidian Forums says: "According to LI, producer Tess Treadwell and designer Sydney Wolfram (and three interns) seem to be got laid off too." Thanks <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/26/report- ... >.

So when do they open their own studio and get hired to make an even more rushed out buggier piece of shit sequel for Bioware or Bethesda?

I hear you man, it's pretty sad how 'Demon's Souls', a console game(!), is the only thing challenging enough to hack through these days. I mean, in Risen you died a lot on 'hard' mode but it was still easy to progress if all you have to do is hit the 'load' button over and over again.
(Don't tell Canberra I'm playing Risen!) :bored:

Anyway layoffs are normal after a major release regardless of sales, unless you're of course one of Todd's henchmen. Obsidian will soldier on and make yet another "rushed buggy piece of shit game (with some good writing and skill checks between the cracks)" for Bethesda and Bioware. It's the only way to do this and survive as a developing company really unless you make Halo 5: Black Operations.
