90 person team working on Fallout: Online

[ Game -> Update ] - More info on Company: Bethesda v. Interplay | More info on Game: Fallout: Online

There's a new interview with Eric Caen in Edge Magazine where he reveals details of Fallout: Online and the legal battle between Interplay and Bethesda:

Interplay President Eric Caen confirms that MMOG development is in progress and scheduled for a 2012 release.

Eric Caen, president of Interplay, has stressed that the Fallout MMOG (previously known as PV13) is not vapourware. While the publisher is still not ready to reveal specifics on the game, it claims the MMOG has a dedicated team of 90 people working on it, and is scheduled for a 2012 release.

"I can’t say too much. What I can say is that everyone who is registered is getting a newsletter every five or six weeks," Says Caen. "The content is not a typical newsletter with a lot of technical information; it’s letters from NPCs inside the game, writing to other NPCs about what they’re experiencing.

"We’re giving a lot of hints about the future of the game. We have a beta scheduled for 2012, with the commercial launch in the second half of 2012. We have 90 people working on it. Even in January 2009, you were already able to move across the world."

Caen made the comments during an exclusive interview in issue 221 of Edge, which will be available from UK newsagents on Tuesday 26. He goes on to reveal that the game is about reconstruction and hints at the company's intention to integrate multiple portals.

"An MMOG must be a lot deeper than a standalone game. It’s not a shooting game we’re making. You can shoot, but it’s a very small portion of the game. The game itself is about reconstructing the world. What is unique about our project is how we’re trying to get it into many communication systems.

"This is a big problem for World Of Warcraft, because the fantasy universe is not compatible with modern communication systems. It would be odd to receive an SMS from a troll. But in a post-apocalyptic world…"

When asked about Bethesda's take on the Fallout universe, Caen is diplomatic but clear in his assertion that there are improvements to be made.

"We appreciate some portions of [Bethesda's work], and we’re not necessarily fans of everything. I think they miss a lot of the humour, and the fans seem to agree with that. Fallout 3 was a little bit too serious - that’s definitely not where we’re going. Our Fallout MMOG will be extremely funny."

The new Edge came sliding through my letterbox today. I was about to cut it up and reassemble it into a huge paper effigy of myself, like I always do, but then something caught my eye. An interview with Interplay’s president, Eric Caen? Ooh. What does he have to say?

Some quite heartening things about Fallout Online, as it turns out.

In short, there are 90 people at Interplay currently developing Fallout Online, and both the game and its beta are both scheduled for 2012. Caen says that “Even in January 2009, you were already able to move across the world,” so it sounds like the game’s a ways into development. He also says that the team are planning on amassing one MILLION subscribers, which strikes me as a pretty meaningless number.

On the subject of what Interplay are actually doing with Fallout Online, Caen is naturally pretty cagey, but the few things he does say have been published on the Edge site. To whit:

I think [Bethesda] miss a lot of the humour. Our Fallout MMOG will be extremely funny. At the same time, an MMOG must be a lot deeper than a standalone game… you can shoot, but it’s a very small portion of the game. The game itself is about reconstructing the world.

He also says Fallout Online will be unique in its approach to communication systems, and goes on to joke about Trolls receiving SMS messages from one another in World of Warcraft. So, by the sounds of things there’ll be some kind of player courier network, or fighting over radio stations. Reconstructing the world, and communication systems providing a unique challenge? Colour me very curious indeed.

If the idea of waiting more than a year doesn’t faze you, you can sign up for a place in Fallout Online’s beta on the official site

I'm assuming a majority of that 90 is Masthead?

I wonder where this puts Earthrise then for Masthead.
