I've been digging the lead guy on this for years. I was pretty sceptical about the latest release purely because whenever I look forward to something or someone tries to do something "artistic" it turns out like a indie turd.
Basically they released 9 EP's with 4 songs each with each EP having a different style/instruments, etc. Some are less distinct then others. Not all of them are great (the electronic one is crap) |

My question is why? The actual musicality of their albums are pretty solid, they just sound like a hard rock band from the 70's. |

They sound like a bad hard rock band from the 70's. There's a very good reason for why certain people tend to have such glowing opinions of entire decades of music. Entropy (mostly) deals with the shite. |

The first album sounds like a bunch of kids who got sold a set of good songs written by some geezer who's been following rock since the late sixties, only the songs ended up lazy overproduced copies of their obvious influences. Every rock band in the last 40 years is in there. Fureal. Zep, Purple, Sabbath, Oasis, White Stripes, Uriah Heep, they're all in there and it's all too damn obvious.
Then the 2nd album confirmed they had no songwriting talent.
Also, australian
Besides, you're spoilt for alternatives. Black Mountain, Jex Thoth, Black Keys, Graveyard, etpetercetera. |

I've always been aware that the passage of time tends to be the best equalizer and remover of trite pop music from the decades of yore, but as a genre "hard rock" is certainly my favorite. Whether or not the music of the band Wolfmother is, or is not, original was not my assertion, but merely that I like the sound. The sound of the many bands that they emulate and impersonate. They do a fair job, I think. Are they my favorite band? Certainly not, as the music from the decades past is in most cases better as they were the "real deal" but if they come on the radio, I won't change it. It may not be the best, but its certainly not bad.

It is, however, one of possibly multiple reasons why you get a lot of hate when you mention them, which was your original post's point, right? And it's not about being unoriginal, hardly any band has any claim to originality anymore. It's about wearing your influences on your sleeve, it's about not bringing anything new or exciting to the table, it's about not looking like some fake, mass produced, major label construct.
On a personal level, all they really do for me is make me want to stop the track and go listen to LZ or any of those old guys.
So welcome to the world of musical guilty pleasures. You could have done a lot worse, mind.
