[ Game -> Article ] - More info on Game: Fallout: New Vegas

We've learned a bunch more information about Fallout: New Vegas from the PSM3 article. Check out the list below:

  • It shows the command wheel for followers, with 8 commands: toggle melee/ranged, open inventory, toggle stay close/keep distance, back up, toggle aggressive/passive AI, use stimpack, toggle wait here/follow me, return to normal dialogue.
  • Scripting is wittier, characters more distinct. Example from vigour test word association: mother-human shield.
  • Opening inventory consists of a kit from the doc, adapted to your starting stats (like Fallout 1).
  • The Nevada area is less affected by the nuclear war, so it has plant life, relatively unspoiled houses, and in visual presentation has saturated colours and a bright sky.
  • There's a tutorial (led by a character named Sunny who looks a lot like Moira Brown), but unlike Fallout 3, it's optional, so you can hit the open game in 5 minutes from starting.
  • NCR and Caesar's Legion are the confirmed faction, article assumes Brotherhood of Steel will be in but they weren't not mentioned in the presentation.
  • "In New Vegas it's all about the player examining the ideologies of the various groups that are controlling the area and supporting one over the others," explains Sawyer. "Each of the ideologies will have something good that you can relate to, but will also have massive flaws."
  • When asked about PS3's Fallout 3 being inferior to the others and if New Vegas will do better, Obsidian devs make no promises but indicate it was a learning process and they're working with all 3 platforms and all have problems.
  • The New Vegas strip is still in construction but will have gambling, variety shows and concerts.
  • Electrical power is key in the faction struggle.
  • Radiation is still a problem, there's a nuclear test site to explore north of New Vegas.
  • The soundtrack will blend "Rat Pack style tunes with more Western numbers".
  • New Vegas doesn't tell a single-player story, but weaves decision into the gameworld and gives you greater power to influence things than Fallout 3 did.
  • On top of adding back in geckos, New Vegas has a whole new type of animal: mutated mountain rams called Big Horners.

Thanks again Brother None!

This makes me think about Bioware.

I think it'd kind of be cool to not have the Brotherhood in there, as well as the Enclave. They're iconic, sure, but then it stops feeling like something awesome and more of a gimmick. It would be interesting to hear people talk about how they played Fallout 3 and are surprised by how mean the BoS are on the West coast.

I assume this means strip clubs too!?

"The New Vegas strip" does not mean a strip club. "The Stip" is the main street in Las Vegas where all the major casinos, hotels, and attractions are:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_Strip

That does not, however, mean that there won't be strip clubs.

The inclusion of the BoS and Enclave in Fallout 3 was a gimmick and not awesome - both organizations hail from the west coast. While it's conceivable the Enclave can move around the country, the BoS had no business being in the capital wasteland.

New Vegas would be an appropriate place to find a small BoS outpost, so long as they aren't the knightly do-gooder swell guy portrayed in Fallout 3.

Since the game seems to be recycling some of Van Buren I wouldn't be surprised if the Brotherhood was at war with the NCR.

For revitalizing the series, I'd say that the Enclave and the Brotherhood are essential to the game. It reintroduces two iconic factions from the series and sets them up for returns in later games, such as the inevitable Fallout 4.

Bullshit. The way to revitalize it and make it their own would have been to introduce new characterful factions with awesome backgrounds, and give the game a compelling story. Instead they took the names of two organizations from the previous games, and portrayed them as something they never were, while taking elements of the story from the first two games and combining them without thought to internal logic or narrative structure.

It would have been cool to have new factions, but I just feel like it wouldn't be a Fallout return without the BoS. I could possibly say drop the Enclave, but whatever. And I kinda liked having the Brotherhood NOT acting like complete assholes for a change. The Outcast picked up the slack on that end though.

Now your nitpicking.

A child tracks down their father to help build a water treatment plant in the ruins of a DC landmark with the help of a techno-religious survivalist outfit who have decided to squander their precious resources fighting a war against mutants hellbent on capturing humans and tying their hands behind their backs. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the remnants of a shadowy government organisation taking orders from a robotic richard nixon are planning to use said water treatment plant to pollute the radioactive water with an agent that will kill mutants...

Come to think of it, why didn't the BoS and the Enclave just team up? They had the same goal!

Probably not too many, considering even gamers in general like it, with exception to Black Isle fanboys apparently.

As time progresses, like with Oblivion, the excitement fades quickly and people become more apparent of the flaws Bethesda's products contain. There are many, and along with broken gameplay, glitches, shitty dialog, bad plots, and bad voice acting, they still didn't take the time to hold true to the Fallout universe when they were proclaiming to be such big fans of it.

The how could such a fickle community as 4chan's /b/ continue to love the games Bethesda makes.

Face it, your all just Black Isle fanboys. Your as bad as Playstation fanboys who get pissed off when their exclusives go to Xbox. Get over it, and enjoy your games.

Wait, fanboys in general are usually bad. That works better.

HAAHAHA. The "general videogame press" are made up of halfwits who pander to the PR divisions of game companies so they give them more advertising dollars.

The general consensus NOW amongst the average game journalist is that Fallout 3 was a bug-ridden mess with horrible writing, virtually no story, incoherent plot lines, terrible voice-acting, bad graphics/physics, and laughable dialogue.

The same thing happened with Oblivion. Everyone in the "general gaming press" creamed their pants over Oblivion when it was in development and when it came out, but after a few months of no PR pressure, they all started writing about how "hey, this game actually is pretty shit afterall." Same complaints there as with Fallout 3: crappy writing, horrible voice-acting, bugs galore, etc.

Are we angry at the "blending" of game genres? Yes, of course. But it's not the main reason we get critical of Fallout 3. Of course we are unhappy that Bethesda took minimal RPG elements and tried to make a shooter out of Fallout, but game mechanics aside - Fallout 3 was a poorly done game by any standard.

Gah! I just had this argument on the Youtube page with the New Vegas trailer; some people just didn't like it!

"B-but everyone else likes it!" Amazing. I'm not everyone else. Go shower in kerosene and fuck an electrical socket, you dull attention seeking zilch.
