Interview with FO3 Girl Designer Ashley Cheng

Post by POOPERSCOOPER »

[ Company -> Interview ]

HONG TONG WE WOOO CHI CHE CHICKEN!! I'm actually not sure if it is
actually a woman but a guy with a womans name but for the moment I'm
going to assume its a woman.

One of the things that Bethesda games are known for are their excellent story lines. How does your studio come up with them?

We look for stories anywhere we can. Our designers are our story
tellers. They write out what happens in quests, they write back stories
about characters and lore, and they write all the dialogue. But those
are just words and a starting point. From there, our level designers
and artists create the living breathing world and that’s where we truly
excel.

The most important story, for me, is the one the player is telling
himself as he plays the game. It’s the story you tell your buddies at
work about what happened to you while you were playing Oblivion or
Fallout 3. Everyone has a different one to tell.

You can read the rest of the interview here.

Thanks, spokomptonjdub.

Spotted @ Voodoo Extreme

Has Bethesda EVER been known for its originality? It's kind of hard to rest on the laurels of your "storytelling" when it has never been anything more than trite rehash.
my vocabulary skills is above you.

Lately, I get the feeling that Oblivion/FO3 players are mistaking quality with quantity.

"storylines?"

Um...let's see -

-you're an anonymous person who wakes up in a cave next to a fire

-you're an anonymous person who walks off a ship.

-you're an anonymous prisoner of unknown crime origin who wakes up in a cell

-you're an *almost* anonymous Vault Dweller who *grows* up in an unknown Vault and searches for your short-lost-daddy

---all in a "sandbox" environment where your choices (ever-so-slightly) change the way people look at you.

When I was about 14 I started writing a science fiction book. I definitely could've written anything like the storylines from any Bethesda game ever made...apart from Call of Cth...oh wait, that wasn't really their storyline...
