DAC's 2008 best game awards - nominations
Wouldn't it be fun to give our own awards!
I"m thinking about something simple, like:
Each person votes for 3 nominees X 2 simple categories
3 games with most nomination votes will be selected from each category and we will run polls accordingly.
The categories and my nomiantions are as follows:
BEST GAME 2008:
- World of Goo
- Fallout 3 (and you can shut your gobs, it should be in the voting)
- A Vampyre Story
BEST RPG 2008 (not MMO):
- Fallout 3
- Mass Effect
- The Witcher Enhanced Edition
I'm wondering which games are gonna make it into the broad category.. apart from my three there's still L4D, Grid, Dead Space, GTAIV, Mass Effect, Spore, etc.
Now vote for nomiantions!
Edit:
Actually I've just thought of a third category:
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT 2008:
- Fallout 3
- Spore
- Duke

I think we can safely declare the genre dead.PiP wrote:BEST RPG 2008 (not MMO):

har har I expected more sense of humar from you guys
Actually despite some imperfections I think these are in fact quite decent games. You don't expect a fallout and a torment to be released every year as Fallout and Torment would no longer be exceptional and memorable. If only every year we could have such three strong games, maybe once in 5-10 years something even better could appear. I say it was a good year.VasikkA wrote: I think we can safely declare the genre dead.

I don't even dare to ask what a "bad" year would be.PiP wrote:I say it was a good year.
It has been a pretty standard year as far as RPGs go. You've got your yearly mediocre action RPG from BioWare(Mass Effect), a fresh, but oh so flawed action RPG from some obscure polack sweatshop(The Witcher) and then you got... Fallout 3.
I'd say it was a terrible year for CRPG's, once again.
Maybe.maybe once in 5-10 years something even better could appear

Best Game 2008
-World of Goo
-Ninja Gaiden 2
-Gears of War 2
Honorable Mentions
-Portal
-I Wanna Be The Guy Version 1.0.0 B2.4
Yeah...pretty shitty year for games.
Best RPG 2008
-Whatever game Jeff Vogel released this year
-Shitstorm of Zehir (seriously, opinions on this are so divided and anyone mentioning it opens a whole can o' worms)
-The Witcher: Console Port Beta Test
Yeah....I didn't really play anything much in the RPG genre, and Fallout 3 was crappy enough that I'd assume all of the above are better than it.

Well sure they're decent, obviously a lot of work has gone into making them.PiP wrote:har har I expected more sense of humar from you guysActually despite some imperfections I think these are in fact quite decent games. Are there any of them that grip you by the heart of pique your interest more than a little? Not really!
But I have been very satisfied with Left4Dead, and I hear there are a lot of projects going on to make new scenarios and maps.
It's about god damn time someone figured out that co-operative games are the way to go!

yes, they are a separate category.
compare it to 2007 - only expansion packs (and for RPGs that are worse than those 2008 three), usuall MMO merchandise and some obscure pseudo-RPGs. The only interesting thing was Witcher but we had to wait for the truly finished version until 2008.VasikkA wrote:I don't even dare to ask what a "bad" year would be.

In 2006 there was Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Titan Quest (lol).
Which triple would you say is best? I say 2008 by a landslide.

It's like comparing a shit to a turd, but whatever gets your point across.PiP wrote:compare it to 2007
I prefer comparing RPG's to other RPG's; in absolute terms, and not in relation to some awful RPG year.

Fallout 3 seems to be a lot like cigarettes-- a nasty habit, but an addiction nonetheless (so long as it works. xbox/ps3 runs much smoother than PC)
Humorously enough, I can say I enjoyed Saint's Row 2. It's crass as hell, but it has enough humor in it, as well as enjoyable gameplay, that I can keep playing for a long period of time, even if it is, for the most part, mindless destruction.
I am unsure of whether or not to nominate it just yet, but I am going to try the Spider-Man: Web of Shadows today, which looks considerably badass, and I'll be sure to let you gentlemen know what works and does not.

The topic does not say RPG. The topic says game. How about we first compare genres to determine which one should be the single one we talk about.PiP wrote:well yeah this year-to-year comparison was about RPG genre
I posit that masturbation tops all other gaming genre combined.
Also, there are two games I have had to destroy due to addiction. The Simms and Civ 3 (fuck you I never did play any other Civs) . Fallout 3 did not fall under that category. I will be lucky if I ever pick up F3 again, let alone ever complete main story.
I claim that I have the right to be bitter about the game industry.
I miss the good ol' USSA.
