Bethesda announced that the Fallout SDK, aptly named the Garden of Eden Creation Kit. They're also going to pump out some downloadable content.

Bethesda Softworks Announces:
Creation Kit and First Downloadable Content for Fallout 3

Editor to be Available in December; Downloadable Content coming for January, February, and March

November 25, 2008 (ROCKVILLE, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax
Media company, today announced plans to make both its editor and
downloadable content available for its award-winning game, Fallout® 3
in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3, called the
G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free
download in December and will allow Games for Windows® users to create
and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official
downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available
exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from
Microsoft and Games for Windows® in January, and more downloadable
content coming in February and March.

“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for
even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by
users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. “It’s fun to
create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own
adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the
G.E.C.K.”

The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will
allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create,
modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building
landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating
characters, weapons, creatures, and more.

Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games
for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items,
and content to Fallout 3.

Operation: Anchorage: Enter a military simulation and fight in one of
the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of
Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed
battle scheduled for release in January.

The Pitt: Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt,
located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for
release in February.

Broken Steel: Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the
Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues
the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.

How about the patch? I still can't play the game. I'd much rather have a patch than some DLC or an SDK.

How about the patch? I still can't play the game.
I've been bored with the game for almost a month now, it was fun while it lasted, but honestly i'm jealous of you now.

I refuse to call the SDK a GECK, so I won't.

The SDK might finally add that bit of replayability I've been looking for.

The SDK is a good thing. I'm on my second playthrough of the game, and it strikes me that whoever programmed the engine intended it to be for a Fallout game - it's the people who actually added the content who fucked up.

An SDK will make two things happen: on the one hand, you'll have every moron with a dream and free time cranking out shit. On the other, you'll have geniuses making real Fallout experiences.

I'm also looking forward to Operation: Anchorage, because I think Tranquility Lane was one of the neatest parts of the game.

That wont happen, i have no intress in making a mod for a game that everyone can mod. That was the charm of fallout 2. So long time was passed with allmost nothing made for fallout 2 that any progress made in that area was exciting. When it comes to fallout 3 i rather play what others moded than waste my own time doing that.

Haris the release of your mods sure were exciting and brought the community together.

Either way did any real mods come out of Oblivion or were they mostly just tweaks to modify stuff in the main game? I guess it's somewhat of a shame I got the xbox360 version.

I'd really, really love to see a major bug fixing patch or update of sorts before all this DLC and $$ hunt.

I was bored after my weekend rental. My computer is too shitty to play this without massive lag, and I refuse to pay sixty bucks for rubbish, and then cough up five more bucks every time they shit out their itty bitty shitty content. fuck those guys.

Since I'm old and out of the loop - not having owned a console since the Famicom and not being up on videogames in general these days - I've just found out this DLC stuff is sold instead of provided for free.

While perhaps it's naive of me to assume a $60 game that was barely functioning when it hit store shelves would get the content it should have had via free updates, I'm a little pissy about my latest discovery.

It's fine. I'll probably simply end up pirating the Pitt, because it's one of the few decent ideas Bethesda came up with.
