Bethesda on the SecureROM Issue

Post by King of Creation »

[ Game -> Update ] - More info on Game: Fallout 3

Bethesda has cleared up a bit more about the DRM issues that we reported on earlier:

For Fallout 3’s copy protection on PC, we use the same security
model as we did for Oblivion - a simple disc check. We only use
SecuRom’s disc check functionality for copy protection. We do NOT limit
the number of installs. We do NOT use online authentication or any
other SecuROM functionality except for a disc check when you install
the game and when you launch the game. We do not install any other
programs and we don’t have anything that runs in the background while
you’re playing the game.

If you experience issues installing the game, try running setup.exe
directly off the disc. That will resolve most compatibility issues.

Get the latest information from our tech support forums, including this specific thread related to SecuROM.

Sounds simple enough, but it still doesn't really make up for what happened to mcdonis:

It hard crashed my system every time I tried to run the game.

Turns out that it didnt like Alchol 120 that I had installed and never used.

With all those hard crashes however it did corrupt my windows and I was
forced to go back to a previous install ... Thanks securom

"Turns out that it didnt like Alchol 120 that I had installed and never used."

Sounds like people saying "I download mp3s but I buy the CDs later on".

Turns out SecuROM didn't like the Alcohol 120% he had used to mount the pirated ISO he got off a torrent site. Go figure. At least he served as a warning to the rest of us*.

*Uninstall alcohol 120% before mounting the pirated image.

Yeah I know it sounds lame but I really had never used it. I dont even remember why I downloaded it in the first place. And no I am using a retail copy. lol

It still has given me the blue screen of death a couple of times if I try to run it too soon after boot. For instance if Steam is still trying to load it will crash the whole system and say I have a windows error.

You get enough of those and you end up having to do a restore
