Vault Open to the Public in Europe

[ Film & TV -> Images ]

Our own Kashluk has pointed out that East German leaders, including Erich Honecker, built a nuclear fallout "vault" which will be open to the public for viewing for the next three months.

According to Kashluk's estimates, here's the cost for going through a tour of the vault -

"The Telegraph says it's 15 quid, which is about 19 €, that values around... 30 bucks?"

A couple of interesting factoids:

Commissioned in the early 1970s, building work began in secret in 1978, lasting for five years. Villagers in nearby Prenden were kept in the dark however, believing that the construction was a new missile silo.

In fact, the East German regime was hollowing out a local hillside, and installing a command and control bunker they hoped would be able to withstand all but a direct nuclear strike.

Using 85,000 tonnes of concrete, the three storey bunker, measuring about 65 by 45 metres, was buried underneath a four metre thick 'blast cap' designed to protect East German leaders from explosions above, while complex filters shielded them from radioactive or biological agents.

Now the BBN has been asked to run a short spell of paying tours, which will finance a plan to close up the bunker once and for all.

"We have already installed a security system and are working on documenting the entire bunker," said BBN's Thomas Bergmann, who said that an virtual tour of the bunker, drawn from 1500 high definition photos, would be made freely available within two years.

"But we can't afford to protect it and we can't let it be destroyed. So we will re-seal it in October."

The article can be read here, while a short video can be seen <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/75386 ... p>
Again, much thanks to Kashluk for the heads up!
