christmas is coming

Post by Urizen »

and with it, the age-old question: what do you want for christmas? this is a problem for me, because i never want or need anything that my family can actually give me. my interests are: booz, books and electronics. this is a problem, because...
booz: only dad wants to give me booz, and when he does he has to hide it because the rest of the family doesn't like it.
books: sure. but what? it needs to be something that's available in average book-stores. but how do i know which books are good untill i've read them? maybe some programming books, i dunno. or some classics. i kinda like dickens, maybe i'll ask for that.
electronics: nope. no-one in my family knows the difference between a monitor and a ram-stick, and all the stuff i want is too expensive anyway. maybe a usb-hub or something.

everything i want is either too expensive, scorned upon, or they've never heard of it. how about it, dack, do you have any suggestions? grandma'll prolly start calling me in a week or so asking me what to buy, and i don't know what to tell her!

The Christmas holiday has become obsolete. It's now just a capitalist profit season, nothing more. Spending time with your family and all is the only thing this holiday has going for it, considering the bullshit that surrounds the holiday itself.

Nah, he wouldn't be interestd in those.... :giggle:

Oivind - not sure, never been to Norway, but....what about gift certificates to places you like? That's what I'm asking my family for. That way, they can spend whatever they can afford, and at the very least, you get a good discount on something you want AND like.

well, yeah. maybe i'll ask for that. i'm not a fan of gift certificates, but i guess it may be the better choice. it's not a very personal gift, though, so i'll have to ask for books and stuff as well.

Gasoline storage containers, so you can stock up when it's cheap(er).

Or:

Infrastructure looks pretty good.

A used one for under $25 (plus shipping) sounds about right.

Think of all those utility boxes/etc. that you see all over the place. They are cataloged in this book.

Lots of ways to use your Science and Repair skills.
