[ Game -> Article ] - More info on Game: Fallout 3

PC Gamer UK is going to be covering Fallout 3 in their upcoming issue.

Bethesda have finally broken their silence over their follow-up to the world-beating RPG Oblivion. And we were the first European mag to go over and have a look at Fallout 3, so it's splashed all over our new issue, which is out on Thursday.

So yeah, we got all the artwork, screenshots, info and details on how this post-apocalyptic, first-person RPG will play. We saw it in action. It is awesome. But far more importantly, we came back with some highly prized swag.

In addition, the Official Playstation Magazine will also be reporting on Fallout 3:

This is the first proper gameplay info we've heard from the next-gen update to one of last millenium's most loved franchises. Given Bethesda's class and the intriguing sounding target-system, we're sure Fallout 3 will be just as successful as the developer's last smash hit, Oblivion - with both fans and newcomers.

Expect many more "mainstream" sites and mags to be showing stuff in the coming weeks.

Thanks to Cthulhu and NMA.

This means the exclusivity deals breaks this Monday, for clarity.

Does that mean devs can answer some more serious questions rather than the heap of "What flowers do you like?" that constitutes their communication so far? I dunno, we'll see. They should, but y'know, it's not what Bethesda does best.

At the very least we should see VATS cleared up sometime soon.

Isn`t VATS already clear enough? You play it as a normal FPS, your speed probably and jump height depends probably on some SPECIAL stats etc. then you turn in Pause mode and can aim on what body part you like to aim, except for groin and eyes, because LUlZz too much options on a screen for a console gamer. This also depends on some stats/traits. Then the character automaticly shoots at the bodypart, you aimed for, when you hit the head, you get a bloody gore animation in slowmotion, seeing how the head explodes, and if you make this with a sniper rifle, you see the bullet fly with a camera(max payne) like. You can`t except more complexity from Bethesda on that system, its just simple, plain and stupid.

Forgot to add, without VATS you won`t be able to shoot heads off, no need for further explanation from paid game magazines.

Well I don't think the idea of VATS is that bad, I think it will follow most of the rules that the TB in Fallout did. I still think it sucks donkey dick, but if there HAS TO BE RT Combat, then this might not be that bad. Combat for Fallout...well far from it, and that sucks. Really sucks.

I'd like to see more of the concept art they are using. Not only the location / ambience stuff. Characters!

...you'll have to decide which is the way to eliminate the biggest threats fast, because the V.A.T.S. runs out of action points. Once they're gone, you'll be fighting in real time and without assistance while your action points regenerate.
...
The number of NPCs in Fallout 3 is about 300 (as opposed to Oblivion's 1000), so Bethesda has put alot more alcohol and devtime into making their individual A.I. more realistic and natural. Instead of NPCs walking around doing very simple tasks talking basic gibberish, they will roam with more personalized agendas and socialize with other people about topics that interest them.
...
After the hour long gameplay presentation, we were all equally surprised how far in development Fallout 3 was, even with more than a year left to finish it. It has all the makings of being the first solid bridge between the rapidly growing RPG genre and the immensely pop FPS category...

From what I've read, V.A.T.S. is just an attempt to include action points in a FPS combat, so that ze fans can't claim that Bethesda completely ditched the Fallout combat system.

That means you can pause the first-person combat to make an aimed shot. Whoa, can you feel the role-playing already??

Well I also feel there is more to role-playing than combat, but I do agree with you.

Mostly my point is, that did they add action points into fps combat (which will burn...) or did they design/make the V.A.T.S with the sole purpose of creating a action point fps. If the started from skratch it might , just might be playable, but if they just added it...well i don't see how that could even be playable, not to mention anything Fallouty.

Rapidly growing rpg genre? Only like 2 real rpgs come out per year IF that many, the rest are hybrids or storybook time.
