Fallout 3: Who is this for?

Post by King of Creation »

<strong>[ Community -> Article ]</strong>

<p><strong>Brother None</strong> has written <a href="http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=37054" target="_self">an article</a> analyzing some points about information released by Bethesda in order to determine who, in fact, they are making this game for. Here's a snip:</p><blockquote><em>Game Informer editor Matt Miller noted, when answering what his overall
impression was of the game, that "If you are a fan who is adamantly
against some significant changes to the way gameplay occurs in the
Fallout series, I&rsquo;m going to tell you right now and save you the
disappointment: I don&rsquo;t think you&rsquo;ll like Fallout 3. However, if you&rsquo;re
a fan of the Fallout universe, of the unique look of the world, of the
moral ambiguity, of the dark and often violent humor, and the
invigorating branching story paths, then everything about what I&rsquo;ve
seen of Fallout 3 should please you."</em>

<em>
While we haven't seen nearly as much of Fallout 3 as Matt Miller, this
strikes one as an odd conclusion to make. Not only is he limiting what
defines Fallout in a way that directly contradicts statements from the
developers of the original game <a href="http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php? ... ">(ref)</a>,
but Miller is making a sweeping statement about expectations. To
understand what he's basing this on, it is best to first examine the
specific elements he identifies, namely the unique look of the world,
moral ambiguity, dark and often violent humor, and invigorating
branching story paths. Afterwards, we'll look at some of the revealed
Fallout 3 elements on our own.</em></blockquote><p>

Clean concise summary of recent events. Nice writing, sir.

Reading that again probably wasn't the best thing for me though. I get more and more pissed off every time I hear about what they're doing. I'll probably melt into liquid hate before the game hits shelves.

Yeah, not exactly what i wanted to read, but i guess NMA writes this for the people, who hardly learn anything, when you dont treat them like kids.

I was expecting a more aggressive writing, the codex did it quite nice by asking questions:

okay :chew: now DaC needs a article, too. Some more :heavy metal: style.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; DaC needs a weekly 'Glittering gems of PsychoSniper' blog.

If you were dying of thirst would you drink from a toilet with a giant piece of radioactive shit that has been sitting there for years?

Good article. I like the nod towards Hard Boiled.

"It also showed how popular and fun turn-based combat could be, when everyone else was going with real-time or pause-based combat." -Tim Cain

I hope that closes the orifices of all the people, Fallout newbies and BethSoft developers alike, who claim that "if the original Fallout developers had the technology we have today they'd be doing with Fallout exactly what we're doing in Fallout 3". Sheesh, history is forgotten so quickly, and all the young'uns think everything they're doing is brilliant and innovative.

Incidentally, I'm browsing through my copy of Hard Boiled, and I would love to see a game of it some day. It would make a good twitch game too, but something like Fallout + Earthbound would be awesome.

No, I'm referring to Hard Boiled the graphic novel by Geoff Darrow and Frank Miller. Only the most ultraviolent and brilliant depiction of the retro-future in comic inks. That, plus Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot fit Fallout like a glove.

I found out today that another FPP RPG almost exactly like the one Bethesda is making is comming out.
The difference is that this one takes place in Eastern Europe, and Russia.
Here's the linkage: http://ps3.ign.com/objects/849/849116.html
It's comming out for the PS3 and the PC.
