Post by King of Creation »

[ Film & TV -> Update ] - More info on Film & TV: I Am Legend

For a change of pace, I just wanted to point out another post apocalyptic project going on. We've previously reported on the production of the film version of I Am Legend here at DAC. Lucky for you, the trailer came out today. Check it out here!

For those who are unfamiliar with the film or the book:

Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could
not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and
man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in
what is left of New York City and maybe the world.

I'm not really familiar with the book, but it seems quite a bit like Stephen Kings "The Stand."

It's gonna be adjusted so their version of Neville will be made of pure Will-smithness.

More like the other way around, King is a self-proclaimed Richard Matheson wannabe after all.

The book's great, well worth a read and you can finish it in a day.

As for Stephen King, I really like him, haven't got around to reading The Stand yet, but am about to start on Cell, which is another of his post apoc novels (albiet written a lot later).

The trailer looks... meh. Might be good, but they seem to beplaying up on the 'we are not alone' shock value, when in the book, it's not really about that - he knows there's vampires about, it's how he tries to live with them and survive, rather than OOH LOOK IN THE CORNER.

That is fortunately not the case.

I once saw a film where a man woke up and wanders through a city where no one else lives and he's wondering about it. It looked like an australian city, very 70s, maybe 80s?
Then he met another guy or a dog, I think, can't remember the rest right now.
Seemed very le wasteland.

Does anyone know which film I'm speaking of, I'd like to see it again

Perhaps Omega Man? Which is what I Am Legend is remaking.

Eh, not bad. It's usually noticeable in the trailer if the movie's going to feature "Welcome to earf" catchphrases and dumb shit like that.

First off: fuck Stephen King. Fuck him very much. Fuck his coked up brain, his rambling, and his need to ruin all the great story ideas he has by NOT SHUTTING UP. I mean aside from his short stories, The Shining, and the first Dark Tower novel, without fail he will proceed to butcher any story he comes in contact with. Including The Stand. The Stand was incredibly awesome, until he decided to interject his MAGIC NEGRO COMPLEX* thereby turning a cool post apoc story into some asinine good-against-evil drivel. And don't even get me started on how badly he ruined It.

*The MAGIC NEGRO COMPLEX means that, in Stephen King's world, all black people are one or more of the following: Uneducated, posessed of magic powers, or going to die.

They're both adaptations of the "I Am Legend" book, but I wouldn't say one is a remake of the other.

He's from Maine, he's probably never seen a darkie before.

I'm sure you're a nice guy MSFD, but to tell the truth I'm more interested in what you have to say about FO3.

The Quiet Earth. Decent acting, but boring and didactic. Yeah, it's Australian.

Is this trailer available in non-craptastic non-quicktime format somewhere? Goddamn quicktime crashes my browser every time. Fuck you, Apple. Fuck you and the shitty software you rode in on.

I Am Legend is not about vampires hiding in the attic, it's about adaptation to insane conditions (vampires running the world). The level of paranoia, survivalism and how human relationships operate in such an environment is what makes the story great. And Matheson's tight, cut-to-the-bone writing style.

Will Smith shouting "Eat this, wine-sucker!" is not it. Another book brutalized.
