[ Community -> Update ] - More info on Person: Tony Postma | More info on Game: Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game

Our very own Ausir scored an interview with the illustrious Tony Postma, the conceptual artist for Fallout, which he added to NMA's Fallout Developer Profile Series. You can read the whole interview at this link, but here are some highlights:

On Fallout 1 (and to a lesser extent, 2) I was strictly involved in the conceptual design of the look and feel, particularly the user interface. The team already had an idea of using retro-atom age imagery and objects, so I kept my concepts in that vein. I really wanted the interface to look and function like a "real" device, so I researched and imagined it to be like some computer or car stereo with a removable face plate but with 1950' vacuum tubes, bakelite plastics and glass CRT's. I also came up with the idea that the maps would be from found objects like postcards and period signage picked up from the sands of the desert
(...)
What specifically inspired Fallout for you? What were the biggest influences?

Urban and Sub-urban America of the 40'-50's....the cars, the signage, the art, the architecture...all of it. I already had a few books with photos and documentation of the period. Also the comic books "Big Guy and Rusty, the Boy Robot" and "Mister X" by Dean Motter help with the machinery and the mood.

Thanks Ausir!

On a side note, I've changed the "Picture" of the "Week." I use the term loosely, because this one isn't a picture, and I certainly don't change the thing weekly ;-). A few of you may recognize this flash animation as it's pretty old school, but it resurfaced on the boards recently so I thought I'd share it with everyone.

I give you: Marcus the Singing Supermutant!

Remember psycho....Craig Mullins work has nothing to do with the art direction in the game (we hope).

How much? Is it in Wever or like by Lake Iowa or oooh, even better, Clear Lake Beach? I heard that's a great place to lounge around during the summer.

It's obvious that Bethesda decided the theme for each picture, but yeah, Mullins' work are mainly used for marketing purposes. The images are more generic in nature setting the tone for the rest of the artwork and presenting the D.C. area as the game location. Specific concept art, i.e. specific objects and NPCs, are made by in-house artists.

As for the Fallout interface, I absolutely loved the individual screens for dialogue/barter as well as the character and PipBoy screen. The dialogue was so well written and designed that it deserved an own screen. It felt as if I've played the game with one of those in-game computers.

I gotta agree 100% VasikkA, too bad Betheda will prolly 'update' the interface.

A higher res version of the GUI I could stand, by a bethesda gayed up version will suck.

So he never played the game. Hrm. If it's the same Postma that did the various lewd pokemon pictures then I think I've corresponded with him before...

Isn´t this like very, very old? And I´m quite sure that it had even been posted on DaC quite a while ago.

The other day I was cleaning my house over, and let that damn picture open with the sound very very loud for like 2 hours. I think I speak finnish now.

Well it's not "finnish", it's language that has been a part of the finnish culture. Fuck knows what they sing, only like 1% understand it (no facts, just my bloody drunken opinion).

Actually that's not the original morale breaker. It's the japanese/chinese style anime girl singing it.
