Fallout crashes when starting up

Post by Jack the smack »

I'm on Windows XP, and whenever I try to start the patched Fallout it shows a black screen for 3 seconds then disappears and it's as if the game hadn't loaded.

I tried disabling my video card, then restarting my PC but still the same problem.

My system is the following specs:

Windows XP SP2
AMD X2 4400
Geforce 8800 GTS

Rightclick the Fallout.exe or Fallout shortcut on the desktop...

then set "Compability" -> Compability Mode to Windows 95. /98, when 95 doesnt work.

It should work now. That was eazy, eh? B)

btw. Welcome to DaC - the fastest Fallout Support. Tell your friends.

That didn't work too. So far here's all the things I've tried:

Changing desktop resolution to 800x600, 16 bit.
All possibile Compatibility options
Disabling GFX card and restarting
Lowering GFX card hardware accelleration
Disabling nearly all background programs

You said, you try to start the "patched version", there is maybe the problem, try it first with the unpatched version, if you have any unpatched version. (with compability mode) (maybe set the setup data in compability mode, too. AND install the humengous Installation, which means the biggest one)

Or, you have the wrong patch installed (UK instead of US or something)
Dont install fanpatches, if you havent any, install fanpatches!
which can be found at NMA download section.

Another thing, maybe: you have FAT instead of NSFT (or something) formatted

thats all i know for today.

OK, after my last post I thought "maybe I should try the manual installation". before I installed it using the Autorun, but then I went to http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=1593 and installed it manually.

Works perfectly without setting any compatibility modes or other options. Thanks for your help though.

I am glad NMA and not DaC could help you to solve your problem.

Ah... the irony :sadblinky:
