[Game -> Article] - More info on Game: Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game

In the latest edition, PCGamer Magazine posted their list of The Best 50 Games of All Time. Fallout, previously number 4 on that list, has dropped to number 10! While that may be a travesty, there is still some good news! Our very own Ernesto was quoted in the article:
Seriously, you could cut this game's atmosphere with a knife. I remember walking out of Vault 13, running for my life away from the rats, and finally seeing sunlight "for the first time." It was a small moment that didn't impact the gameplay, but...[these little details] made Fallout brilliant.

Fallout Article
Of course, Half Life is number 1. I don't have the magazine, so I would love it if someone could send along a scan or a description of the whole Top 10 so we can see what obviously overrated games knocked off Fallout. In the meantime, though, I suggest you go an make a hullaballoo over in this thread at the PCGamer forums (which is where you can also read Ernesto's original post.)

It was a small moment that didn't impact the gameplay but that what made Fallout so cool. It was the little things that made Fallout brilliant.

I enjoyed the morality of Fallout and the freedom of it. It was great how I could piss anyone off, hit a kid in the groin with a crowbar, join the local wasteland raiders and come home for dinner and a round of bedroom adventures. You could be a villain, hero and just a bad ass mofo.

The combat in Fallout is probably one of the best examples of Turn-Based gameplay. It was simple but elegant. Not to mention that character creation and development was extremely freeform thanks to the SPECIAL System. You literally could play Fallout anyway you wanted to: sneak, bribe, plant an explosive in the guy's inventory, blast the crap with a minigun and so on and so forth.

I remember how cool it was to see The Master/Richard Grey. Confronting him, you learn of his plans to unify the Californian wastelands. What was the killer though, was convincing The Master that his plan was flawed. If you suceeded convincing him, The Master kills himself.

You kick the final boss' ass without firing a bullet, Jules Winnfeld style.

With all of these qualities and an infamous ending, Fallout is indeed one of the best goddamn games ever. It's a must play for ANY RPG fan.

I agree. The only PC Gamer worth reading is PC Gamer UK, and even then, it sometimes gets it wrong. Stick to objective, unbiased sites like DAC and RPG Codex.

I read them (sometimes) whilst I'm in the loo. Mainly CGW. It's passable for a magazine, whereas PC Gamer is horrendous, especially when it comes to RPG which for them means hack and slash and MMORPG.

I have gaming mags for pretty much toilet reading. It also means there's something worthless on hand if the paper ever runs out.

Can't you people read, like, a normal magazine on the john or something? Gaming mags are so uninteresting, and I don't think they're conducive to bathroom activities, either, so what's the point, really?

Oh I don't know atoga, given the dubious quality of many gaming magazines, they could have a medically cathartic effect easily and consistently, no ? icon_drunk

Battlefield yes. X-Com, not 'drastically'. Although it was a follow-up to Laser Squad 2's design, the whole Geoscape interface, turn based combat, economics system, replayability, alien marauders and gameplay have yet to be bested. Fallout is quite high up there, but X-Com is about on par with Fallout. They're both great games!

When I'm in the shitter, my focus exclusively resides upon the shitting. I've never understood how people could read in there. Maybe my shits are just more urgent and demanding than the median, but damn it, I have to stay on target.

And there's TONS of games on that list that don't belong, for reason too numerous to list at this hour. Some are really great and there's a few games I'm glad to see there, but half of it reads like an honour roll for mediocrity. Ghost Recon? What the hell?
