I'd have to choosse between John Petrucci (Dream Theater and other projects) and Zakk Wylde (Black Label Project and he's Ozzy's current guitarist.)

Petrucci is a technically keen player, but above all he can improvise. His extended solo's never sound repetitive or boring.

As for Zakk Wylde..I don't know why he hasn't been mentioned yet. I saw him live two months ago with ozzy. After playing a 15 minute smashing solo and doing a few riffs behind his back, I knew for sure...This guy's better than Rhandy Roads.

Jimi Hendrix and Carlos are up there, but I'd say the best man ever to touch a guitar is Stevie Ray. Nobody can make the incredible sounds jump out of that guitar like him - god rest his soul...

Actually my favorite part of the EMP is the "Grunge" section. My favorite band of all time is Nirvana (RIP Kurt Cobain). I love all early Seattle "Grunge".

lol guys you got it all wrong

Junior Brown is the greatest guitarist
it may be country crap... but you have to admire a man who can get up and walk away from his guitar during a song to play with his amp - and not screw up the song one bit. Also his guitar is just plain awesome ^_^
If only he played less country... 'sighs'

1. Dave Mustaine
2. Kirk Hammet
3. Van Morrison
4. Carlos Santana

Mustaine may not be the greatest in the world, but he gets bonus points for being psychotic and overly aggressive.

And even though he's not a lead guitar player...
Lemmy Kilmister from Moterhead!!!

The general concensus here is that fast fret wanking equals good. It's easy to play the guitar lightning fast [well not easy but attainable by most] but its difficult to write good music. Take Steve Vai for instance, technically amazing but at the end of the day he's a boring, noodling fret wanker. I'll have to stick with the two Jimi's [albeit different spelling]: Page and Hendrix. Also I remember hearing a song by Django Reinhardht [sp?] which was absolutely shit hot considering the guy only had two fingers.

And Rosh, Primus are fantastic :D
