That can work to your advantage, letting your other people live longer. I liked charisma to get divine favour and a perk every other level.

Adding to what Ed said: Gambling can get you ANYTHING for free. Without you having to put anything in your column, just put the stuff you want in their column and keep pressing gamble, you may have to do it many times but it is worth it in the end for getting free stuff, even from the quartermaster (there is one who gambles).
