It does suggest a certain commendable degree of skill, at least, but the fact remains that Metallica isn't that great and that their endless whining undermines their rockitude.
Well, LZ is all "meh" to me, it feels like most of their songs were just lacking that special little ingredient that makes good songs good. Hearbreaker? Stairway to Heaven? -- Foreigner Song?! Please... Zeppelin's listenable but I wouldn't go OMG MY ANUS IS GOING TO EXPLODE over those dudes.
Metallica was my first introduction to the heavier side of music, Master of Puppets, Kill 'Em All and The Black Album being my first touches to their material, so I'm kinda biased in this debate as well. I'd still say they've got talent and they used to have some really awesome songs in the old days, pretty much pre- black album era. Since then, though, it's been pretty much a bumpy downhill or something.
