Fallout 2 problems

Post by J-Roc »

Sorry for cross posting, but nobody would answer me in the other forum.

When I play Fallout 2 and go into combat, 1/20 times (ficticious statistic) the game crashes to a black screen with an error and I have to ctrl+alt+delete to get rid of it.

It always happens in the same place of a battle in which it happens, for example, right after taking my third turn. This ruined my main save when I was at the Enclave and very close to beating the game. It also just ruined my save with my new energy weapons guy too.

I'm using the old patch because I don't want to invalidate my games and for some reason, the new patch doesn't install anyways. I've also used the Falche2 editor to change a bad trait that I chose by accident at the beginning, so I've been wondering if perhaps that's been the main problem.

Thanks in advance.

You broke it, good job.

No, try the patch again or get it from another source. I used to have a similar problem with getting attacked in Fallout 1. If the blow would connect with me the game would crash. Fixed it with the patch.

Thanks, I'll try it.

WinXP doesn't like Fallout. Try running it in VirtualMachine in Win98, or try DOSBox.

That's not so easy because I only got one computer. Is there any sort of emulator that I could use for one of these?

DOSBox is a DOS emulator that runs on WinXP. Currently (on a decent computer) it will run Fallout 1 without much problem. It's not the best, but it's a really small download, it's free, and it runs damn near any DOS game you throw at it.

VirtualMachine is a multi-machine emulator (sort of) from Microsoft. MicrosoftVM Requires an install disk of whatever operating system you want to run...In essense you've got a second operating system running in the background of WinXP. I've used MSVM to run Win98, Win95, DOS, and Linux all on my WinXP machine. And using MSVM you can play any old games/programs that are pretty much unsupported in WinXP. MSVM is a program.

Do you know where I could get one of these? Once I do get them, will I have to reinstall Fallout 2? Or can I just move it?

Thanks for the help so far. :joy:

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

My mistake...MSVM is actually MSVPC. Microsoft VirtualPC

Also...Wrong Forum. There is a forum on this board dedicated to FO2 and related materials. This would go there.

I tried the dos one and I don't really understand it, but I'm downloading MSVPC right now.

I know this is the wrong forum, but I figured it would get answered here the fastest after trying the F2 trouble shoot forum.

Try compatibility mode too. Also if it always happens at a certain point in the battle try and change what you do from little to radical, to get by the point. It worked for me a few times.

I've tried doing things abit differently, but always the same result. I'll try this compadibility mode, thanks.

Edit: I don't seem to have a compadibility mode. :?

Right-click your Fallout icon on the desktop. Then go to properties and select 'windows 95' in the drop down box under the 'Compatibility' tab.

Ok, I ran it in compatibility and it fixed the main problem. However, it now makes any saves that I do with it unloadable after I've left immediate game play. The screen also still freezes after certain kills.

I'm a sad panda. :(

Learn to use DOSbox. It's very easy. Just read the readme files, etc and you'll be set.

edit, moved to Fallout/2 forum. Oooooooooooo Shadow Topic!

I figured out how to mount the drive, but I'm not sure how to access fallout from there.

Does anyone know what I could type?

The directory to my fallout 2 is "C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\FALLOUT2.exe"

Not so much. Me and my friend were watching Trailer Park Boys and wondering why my Fallout 2 wouldn't work. I went to take a leak and he made this account to make a thread asking for help (not this one.)

I like some rap, but I'm more of a rock/metal kind of guy.
