[ -> Interview]

There's a pretty general interview with the ex-Black Isle guy, Damien "Puuk" Foletto, up at Winterwind Productions.
WW: The last crpg released by BIS/IPLY was Lionheart, developed by Reflexive. You worked on the title in an uncredited capacity. What was your involvement?

DF: My involvement was really small. On occasion I would work with Chris Avellone editing the dialogue for the game.

WW: What were your thoughts on the game's potential during development and the reception it received?

DF: I thought the original concept of the game was a good one. It read great on paper – an open-ended CRPG using the SPECIAL system and taking place in an alternate earth history where magic and fantasy had become reality. Things went downhill from there once real-time combat was introduced, map notes were never put in, game flow became erratic and all but disappeared after Barcelona, etc. The potential for a good game was there, but it really fell short. It’s too bad, because the core engine and tools were excellent.
Real-time combat and special don't mix, that's for sure.

Puuk bemoans the inclusion of real-time combat in a SPECIAL game? Isn't he the guy who wanted GTA: Fallout or a Fallout FPS or something equally asinine?

He probably thinks Fallout without SPECIAL is still Fallout.

Edit - What the fuck is Winterwind Prod. and why does their website look like a CS clan website?

He was working on Fallout 3 where they had some kind of real-time/turn based hybrid going on. Or maybe it was real time-time with pause.

I think this is a lesson that Bethesda should take close note of.

They would have it two ways. You could choose to have combat in full TB or RT with pause, and both would have probably been terrible because hybrid systems don't work (see Arcanum and FOT).

FOT in RT was pure chaos.

Did you ever notice that CRPG can also be an acronym for CRaP Game?

It`s the interview of a Fallout fan that happens to be a developer, and very revealing at parts, cool.

But these interviews with the aproval of the employee mean that we won`t see any revelation on Quake4, wich is beeing done by the same company he works for, damn...

Quake IV? Really? I thought that Puuk was at EA and Quake IV is being developed at Raven for Activision.

That cad got a new job without telling me! Well, it's not like I've been carefully following Days of our Puuk in any case.

JA2 was just TB as soon as you entered combat. And I haven't played X-Com: Apocalypse but I never heard anything good about it.

That's my point: games where the combat is only TB work. Games where combat can be TB or real time don't work so well. It's better to go one or the other. Doing both generally turns out badly.
