Okay, so apparently, for reasons that baffle me, there is a 8-bit version of Fallout 3. In Japanese...It's unclear if this is a fanmade project, but I THINK it's actually being pushed by Bethesda to get more attention to the franchise in Japan. I don't even know. You can mess with it <a href="http://www.bethsoft.com/jpn/fo/fo_quest ...
Spotted @ Bethesda Blog

It's from Bethesda. It's used to push the bullet points on the back of FO 3's box. That's what all the moon talk said. Remember that the advertising for FO 3 / NV is comparing it to JRPGs and hence the demake. It's satire, I guess. That is all.

I think this is pretty clever marketing and interesting but only because I'm looking at it from the outside. The marketing won't do shit in Japan and they will hate it because it's American made probably.

Either way I think the marketing in Japan is being done very well.

Actually, for a western game, Fallout New Vegas did pretty good in Japan. Even broke the top 10 weekly sales for afew weeks.
