Occupation Thread

Post by Dogmeatlives »

This is the Occupation Thread. Here you come and tell us what it is you do for a living, and please describe the job in detail with Pros and Cons along with general description. This will somehow help everyone more clearly understand how many assholes visit DaC.

I'll start. I am currently an unemployed student. My previous job was factory worker, and it was hell. Being unemployed isn't as cool as it sounds. Although I have money set aside, I have no insurance. My schedule is all bonkers and my insomnia has reached very unhealthy heights.

I go to school nights, which is cool I guess. I just need to find a job, and nobody is hiring. If you live in Sussex County New Jersey and want to hire me, let me know. I have experience in Fallout fansite surfing, and I draw good. My resume is available absolutely nowhere, and I am pale and will allow only a certain amount of teasing about my paleness and overall scrawny appearance. Thanx hire me!

Unemployed student (political science major, economics and leadership minor) with plenty enough savings on bank account. Day-time lectures at University and mostly self-studying at home, due to the low budget of our faculty (social sciences).

+ I can choose when I study and when I don't want to and which methods I want to use in my learning process
+ Schedules aren't an issue if I want on an occasion to go have a beer with a friend, go jogging during work hours or take part in political and social activiites

- Being a student in Finland means you get paid less benefits by the government than any other unemployed person (the bums at the park bench have 40 % higher income than I do, but they don't need to do shit for their money)
- Because my schedule changes from week to week it's almost impossible to have a side job to earn some more money (except telemarketing, which on principle I choose not to do), because in all the job interviews I've been at the employers would've required me to come to work even if I had lectures or other forms of teaching at the same time (naturally)

I spend my excess energy on my website, politics, personal exercise and my Mrs.

Consultant, IT.
+ Decent wage
+ Can, where I am stationed right now, work more or less when I want to as long as I do my hours.
+ Can, at time, be rather challenging and fun work.
+ Much overtime --> $$$
+ Since my company is well represented where I'm at for the moment I do enjoy my workmates.

- Dealing with customers.
- Can, at times, be boring as hell.

On my spare time I work out at the gym and play football (soccer you bloody yanks), and occationally participate in CIV4 games with my mates.

I think Geertz has some cool ideas. You might digg it if you come across. Just a thought :drunk:

you mean you actually get paid while being a student? And education is free also, I assume? You lucky bastard! That you still have the cheek to complain :hahano:

Kashluk & MisMatch = Gotta get me some of that

I'm a student at Phoenix College-- it's community, so it's cheap, but I can't find work whatsoever. Tuesdays and Thursdays are shit (8:30 am - 2:45 pm), but Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are one class, with a lab on Monday. Classes and teachers are both good, so I can't complain.

Time's ended for political volunteering, so I gotta find another excuse as to why I'm not employed... I'm thinking about running for Justice of the Peace or Constable in the next election cycle, they both pay decently so long as you can get enough votes.
Constable requires you to serve legal documents, though, so apparently you have to take sidearm training; just another work benefit.

Is that the same as Process Server?

Yeah, it says Constable in the wiki.

But I imagine that is just a subset of potential Constable functions.

You got it. It may be shit but at least it's good money, with potentially interesting encounters.
60-65k per year isn't bad for a 19 year old, but if I can make justice of the peace, that's generally closer to 90k. I figure it's a bit harder to secure, though.

So, right now I'm suffering through one of less nice sides of the job. After working from 08:00 to about 17:30 yesturday (18th) I went home and managed to get 1h of sleep before getting up at 01:00 and going to work again (19th) since we have a release.

I'll probably get home around 14:00 but I cant sleep more than 2h or I wont be able to fall asleep tonite. And I must be able to do that since I have to get up 06:00 tomorrow (20th) morning. I'll more or less be a zombie for the rest of the week.

Producer/Game Designer, which sounds cool, and at times it can be, but unfortunately I work for a "game" company that amounts to little more than a glorified ad agency. We do primarily flash games for client's websites, and our clients are usually nickelodeon companies, so they are directed towards little kids.

Also, I have a terrible horrible boss; the reasons why are too great to even start listing, plus I would get all worked up about it anyway.

Luckily, he doesn't work in my office, so we only have to deal with him directly every 1-2 months or so, but he tends to stay for about two weeks... and I'm already starting the complaint train.

The people in my office are great, and it's better than working retail (which I did through college) but sometimes the hours around deadline kill me. But at least I don't have real set constraints on when I have to come in or how long a lunch I can take, as long as my work gets finished and I don't miss a meeting with a client or something.

I work as kind of a jack of all trades of butt. I build furniture, load boxes of furniture or built furniture in customers cars which generally means a customer will ask me to fit a 7 foot dining table in their BMW sports car because they were under the impression that it was in a box which means that it's supposed to be really small. I'm sorry but you have to be an idiot if you think you have to build the table top of a table.

I also help customers out and keep control of the inventory of furniture when we start selling them really fast because our system takes 1 day to update the inventory numbers and we often oversell. Often times we can get away with it because people will say they won't be able to pick it up in a week and we can get a new one in just in time hopefully. If not we can say that it was damaged when we took it off the truck or some bs.

We run a shit operation but I enjoy it enough to have been working there for 4 years. I just do that weekends and during the week I got to school.

_____________

Just got employed again after a two month unemployed non-student transition period. boo.

I do validations and insurance for a cruise ship company and plan on going back to college in the new year - not sure if I'm going to do Glendale CC or U of Phoenix yet, haven't had much time to look into it after just finishing moving for the second time in three months.

Once I start I will put the pros/cons, but as of yet I have no idea what I'm doing :joy:

Mismatch, I dunno if you've already looked into it, but you should think about Vyvanse. I'll leave it to you to either investigate or disregard with my endorsement.

I just got a bit more information about the jotp/constable jobs; both require full-fledged races, so I doubt I will actually run. However, I did get elected to State committeeman tonight, so... apparently, that's pretty big stuff. I gave a half-assed, improv speech, but it seems most of the people present thought it was better than the other half-assed speeches.

State Politics = 1337 (allegedly)
