Wasteland in a Window!

While banging my head on my desk, trying to figure out why the geniuses at <a href="http://microsoft.com">MicroSoft</a> didn't allow old DOS games to run in a window, I decided to do some internet searching for a solution. I ran across a little program called <a href="http://dosbox.zophar.net/">DOSbox</a>, which is basically a DOS emulator for Windows.<br><br><div align="center"><img src="http://duckandcover.net/wasteland/wl_windowed.jpg" height="226" width="327"></div><br><br>It's still in the works, so I'm not sure what else will run on it.<br><br>However, I'd be greatful if someone out there with the DOS version of <a href="http://www.interplay.com/fallout">Fallout</a> would test it out with <a href="http://dosbox.zophar.net/">DOSbox</a> and see if it didn't work as well. I'd also like a screenshot of that if someone does it.

Dude, wasteland works perfectly fine in WinXP...

Oh...

"In a window"... yeah, that kinda sucks... What weird though is that back on NT4 and perhaps 2000, most stuff worked in windows.

Yeah.. So, you only read one word in the whole title? :D

Some people can get Wasteland working in a window under various platforms of Windows(NT, 95, 98, etc), others can't.

When I hit ALT-ENTER in Wasteland, it bugs out. The screen in the window doesn't update at all, for example. Another guy on IRC was saying that Windows just up chucks for him when he tries the ALT-ENTER thing with old DOS games.

Also, DOSBox provides speed up and slow down emulation settings. Wasteland PC's mouse cursor takes input way too fast on my rig. If you click on a menu over the map, the guy on the screen runs to where the button was that you clicked on.

I am having trouble saving my game in WL under DOSbox though. Not sure why this is. The <A href="http://dosbox.zophar.net/status.htm">status page</a> for the thing says that it's 90% working and I can't get either RoadWar 2000(which is annoying as hell under Windows because it constantly flips between full screen and windowed) to save, nor can I get Wasteland to save.

However, according to the <a href="http://dosbox.zophar.net/news.htm">news page</a> for the emulator, there's a new version coming out soon.

I've been wanting a program like this for YEARS. If it sorts out the horrible memory requirements most DOS games have, I'll be ready to call DOSBox my daddy.

That'll take some doing. The machine code of the programs itself are configured for using the old segment+offset scheme, which caused the 640kb limit. The newer DOS programs used DOS4G to get a flat 32-bit address scheme, but you couldn't just plug in 16-bit programs into it, like "dos4gw.exe wasteland.exe".
Maybe they can pull it off, but if they thunk like Win32 did to Win16, you're going to get hits like crazy.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this, please.
