Fallout: 6th most influential "RPG" of our time

Post by King of Creation »

[ Community -> Article ] - More info on Game: Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game

ActionTrip decided to put together a list of their top ten "RPGs" of all time. I use the term RPG loosely though, because A.) WoW is #1 (an MMO), and B.) Diablo (not an RPG) is higher than Fallout. Therefore, this list loses all credibility, in my opinion. Regardless, here are the nice things they had to say about Fallout:

As another co-project of Black Isle Studios and Interplay, Fallout
marks a rather bold step in the world of RPGs. To this day, it is
honored throughout the gaming community as a truly unique role-playing
experience. With an engaging sci-fi backdrop and straightforward
character creation system, it didn't take too long for Fallout to claim
its rightful place in the industry. One of its main traits was using
the so-called SPECIAL character creation system - as most of you
probably know, the "SPECIAL" stands for Strength, Perception,
Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck, all of which
represent attributes that are essential to the whole experience.
Fallout 2 was released one year after the original, receiving rave
reviews - even though the game's mechanics remained the same.

They did say "Most Influential RPGs of Our Time" not 10 rpgs they like most or have best gameplay. So that list is not that much off.

In my gaming experience, most post-Fallout 'RPGs' aren't greatly influenced by it(except maybe Troika's bugfests), so I'm surprised why Fallout even made it in the top 10. :?

Already blogged this baby. But yeah, I agree with WoW at the top. If only because MMORPGs dominate and WoW dominates MMORPGs.

Yeah, but it's an MMORPG, not an RPG. They're two different genres in my opinion.

Meh. Oblivion and WoW have almost identical gameplay, one is offline, one is online, so I don't really see the big genre divide there.

Wow is not really mmorpg, its a singleplayer game with chattoption in my opinion. Sure they pretend to have a crafting system and tradesystem, but they really dont.

Yet it still apparently dominates your lie (aside from oblivion inspired FO mods)

You had to scroll down a bit further. It was #0.5, the only thing better than #1.

WoW was more successful than influential. It's not influenced any other good games or really done anything for the genre.

Ok...so we've definitively concluded that this list is bollocks.

All these types of lists are bollocks. They put some popular crap at the top regardless of quality but then list a couple of classics to give themselves 'crediblity' as long time gamers. They do it everywhere these days. Turn on any of the music channels on TV and you'll get emo pop songs then once an hour they'll play something by the sex pistols.

Well wow doesnt have a trade system, just about anything that would be worth trading is soulbound to you meaning once you equip it nobody else is able to equip it.

And all items crafted suck so much compared to ones you can loot of monsters that crafting is made 100% worthless raising. And if you manage to find a real good item on a monster you cant sell it cause once you pick it up its soulbound to you.

Only mmorpg feature it has is that some monsters requier 40 players to go toghether and kill it wich take 8-16 hours of watching the screen and pushing one button. This has to be done 20 times before you get that 1 item you are looking for.

You really dont care who those other 39 players are and you forget them as soon as the fight is over and the big boss is dead.

And pvp is also stupid cause when you kill a player he loses nothing and you gain nothing. Might as well play counter strike or day of defeat at least its more fun pvp there.
