Penny Arcade unsympathetic to Troika

Post by Mr. Teatime »

[Company -> Update] - More info on Company: Troika Games

In their most recent update, Penny Arcade!
have written a short bit about Troika. There's no new information, but
the opinion is an interesting one, which I'm drifting towards agreeing
with.

It sounds as though Troika
is no more, or at any rate they are liquidating everything in their
offices, so if they are still coherent as a developer presumably
their next game involves sitting in a bare room. Troika (for those of
you with a concussion) is the little company that couldn't, producing
games of marvelous, unprecedented promise coupled with epic lapses in
technical execution. The company was a hole that great ideas crawled
half-way out of, so I hope you'll pardon me if I don't dab the corner
of my eye with a handkerchief and try to look strong. There were
undeniably talented people there. Hopefully they'll end up someplace
where that kind of thing matters.

I think that sums up a lot of my recent feelings toward the company. I
can honestly say, I haven't played a single one of their games through
to completion: the nearest I got was the end boss in Arcanum. I won't go as far as saying 'no more free rides', though.

Thanks MrSmileyFaceDude for the news tip.

It seems to me Troika tried to build a business by trying to appeal to the hardcore RPG market, and had the business crumble because they expected customers to tolerate extremely buggy titles. It's a very Derek Smart approach to game developmet - "It's full of bugs, but you should play it because it's the only game like this!"

They certainly have no sympathy from me.

Well, the result is the same as if they pulled a Derek Smart, but I think they sound less suspicious, and look like they have good intentions.

Edit - You can put everything to the past tense.

I don't think PA seemed hostile to Troika, more bitter that they didn't live up to what they, and all of us I presume, think they could have been.

At least he wished them well and pointed out they were talented. He didn't kick them when they were down from what I could tell.
Don't hate him because he's beautiful.
