Reviews?

Post by Flamescreen »

Hey guys,
Do you think we should have a map reviews forum, or is it something we should do here internally?(As most maps wouldn't need new threads, but we could always grade them). I would like to review Quagmire(when I finish it, I keep postponing) and that Evil Dead map. Jailbreak next on my list.

Well, the problem with that is if a map comes along that isn't very good. If we say it gets a "3/10" or something, and the author of the map sees it (which is actually the intent of the whole thing), he/she might freak out and quit mapping because of a lousy review.

IIRC we were talking about this idea on the old forums.

Well, anyway, if we do something like that, I think it should be a "Map of the Week" or something with no actual rating/score, just a simple posting of what was good about the map and what wasn't good.

Just my $.02 :)

PS and I'll be looking forward to any comments on my maps *hint hint*

Which is why I mentioned it in the first place! Since we have all these different forums now, I thought "what the heck, why not?"

Fine by me. We could name it something like Thumbs up list some stuff, then Thumbs Down, list some stuff.

this is an idea i actually really like. i even put my reviews on one of the old posts in the old forums. and my critic ass might have some use again, now that people are asking about big questions on the editors that i can't help with. (i got to get educated on them again)

Hmmm.

This would be pretty cool i suppose, although i can see some people gettin a bit sore over it.

I spend atleast 20 hours on a small map, so if i make a big one, and someone tells me, nah that is shit, id be pretty annoyed.

Hopefully, any comments would be way more constructive than "Your map sux!".......

The idea would be I suppose, you getting info(sort of like beta testing) about your design strengts(to keep) and your design weaknesses(to improve). Perhaps some small details could be rectified on spot even.

Yeah that would be pretty cool, people could submit thier maps and they could be examined and then they could pollish em off based on the review and then resubmit or something.

Perhaps a 1-10 scale in each of several mapping categories?

1. Map Layout
2. NPC Interaction
3. Battles/Tactics
4. Creativity
5. Playability
6. Replayablity

And perhaps asking the creators if they want such a review to be posted...

Yikes... I hope yer not talkin' about any of my maps...

JJ86: That sounds like a good plan, although I still don't like the "numbered score" system for the reason I mentioned in my first reply . Perhaps, instead of numbers, we use the "Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down" system that Flamescreen mentioned. Something like this:

Tile placement/Map layout, the Good: blah blah blah
Tile placement/Map layout, the Bad: blah blah blah
Tile placement/Map layout, the Ugly: blah blah blah

NPC interaciton, the Good: blah blah blah
NPC interaction, the Bad: blah blah blah
NPC interation, the Ugly: blah blah blah

And so on n' so forth.

That reminds me, after I bought my new car last month, I got a call from a company doing a survey on the service that the dealership gave to me. They asked on a scale of 1-10 how I would rate the level of service on the dealership. I said I would probably give them an 8 (usually 10 is the best score on these tests - think of the movie "10" with Bo Derek). Then he asked me why I gave them a failing score. I said I thought they gave above average service and told them to give whatever number score they wanted and hung up.

So I guess you are right - different people interpret numbers differently, but everyone should know what thumbs up or thumbs down signifies - right?

Well, actually no, but it's the best we can do. You can't satisfy everyone, you have to be the best you can and be indifferent to creator judgement. Creators will be found always, to say: Why the F***k are you giving my map thumbs down? It was F*****g perfect you a*****e! I'm leaving your stupid forum!
