Tag Names

Post by Jimmyjay86 »

Alright I did a little experiment with a key that I made in the entity editor, The tag name was entered appropriately as "Key1" and saved. I also made two dead man entities, one with the key in his inventory. Then I went to the level editor and made five different options for tests and a locked door with the tag name set as "Key1".

1. The key laying on the ground.
2. The key laying on the ground and the tag name entered in Entity Edit.
3. A box with the key placed in the inventory.
4. The dead man with the key already in his inventory.
5. A dead man with the key placed in his inventory.

The keys in options 2, 3, and 5 unlocked the door while the other 2 options didn't. So the only time you have to enter the tag name in the level editor is if the item is not in someone's inventory and is laying on the ground. And always place the item in an inventory within the level editor.

Tag Names:

If the tagged item is to be "in" something, make the entity (with a Tag Name) from within the Entity Editor, and add it to the container/actor from within the Level Editor.

Otherwise, tag it from within the Level Editor.

That's all there is to it, really. This is the way I do stuff, and I haven't had any problems.

When I first started mapping (a loooooooooooong time ago... before Deathclaw Desert... even before the red-headed step child that was RoboCentral), I did #2 on your list and it didn't work for me. Hmm...

Also note that the level editor won't recognize the key in #2 if you try and use it in a trigger - you'll have to manually type it in and/or Tag it from within the Level Editor.

Yeah that's what I meant in #2 - the "Entity Edit" feature is within the level editor(F4). If you have an item laying on the ground that had the tag name entered only in the entity editor as option #1, it won't work and the name won't even show up when you hit F4 in the level editor.

Did you get the description from the readme? I don't remember seeing it in there or is that from a tutorial?

Well, uh this description - you repeated what I had said:

Otherwise, tag it from within the Level Editor.
