I just got finished playing a couple rounds of halo with my friends on splitscreen and had a blast, I love halo, and my mother probably is a deathclaw.

Help DaC again - no money required [ Community -> Update ]

I've been looking at our downloads and realise that whilst we offer fast downloads, we don't actually have many files. Anyone who knows about mods, Fallout files, sprites, tiles, save game converters, patches, and so on, with access to FTP (which rules out a lot of university firewalls), want to help out by being our official Downloads Manager? Just reply in this thread or PM me and we can sort something out.

I thought I'd give an update on the site, specifically a request for people to help out with the technical side, and the donations.

Thankfully, both of these 'issues' have been resolved more or less. Thanks to some generous donations from members of the community, we can renew duckandcover.cx for three years (the maximum). There's next to no chance of getting duckandcover.net, even though it's due to expire in April, because it looks like someone has already reserved it (ie. as soon as the domain expires an automated system will jump in and register it).

So, thank you to everyone who donated. You can still donate if you want, since it's always nice to have money spare for the site, but the immediate crisis has been solved.

Secondly, a long-time lurker called Mutant has joined the DaC staff to help out with php and general site maintenance. He's already sorted out some issues for us (like not being able to trace IPs), so: welcome, Mutant!

Thirdly, DarkUnderlord plans to finish his code shortly, so the site should be fully functional within the next few weeks.

Domain name and donations [ Community -> Update ]

In a few months it will be a year since the new staff at DaC started running the site. That also means the registration for the domain www.duckandcover.cx will be expiring soon, unless we renew it. It costs $50 to renew for a year, $123 to renew for three years. So basically, I'm asking for donations to help pay for the domain name for as long as possible. A year at the least, but if we get enough, for three years.

Looking at the number of people who vote on the front page polls, we have at least 70 registered, regular users on the site. If everyone sent in $2, we'd have enough for the domain for three years. If everyone sent in $2.50, we'd have enough for three years with duckandcover.cx and be able to put in a claim for duckandcover.net when it expires in a few months' time, having it redirect to duckandcover.cx.

You can donate using the PayPal button on the forums, or by clicking here. If you want to donate but can't use PayPal, PM me and I'll try and sort something out, though PayPal is much more convenient. The money goes into a PayPal account I set up for donations, and emails announcing new donations are forwarded by PayPal to myself, King of Creation and Insane-Lark, to reassure people that one of us isn't going to run off with the money. All funds in this account will go back into DaC.

It comes down to whether you like DaC. We need money to keep the site around - without the domain name, the site will die. We can't continue our crusade of being nearly the best site ever without it. If you can afford to send a few dollars, please do so. To the people who have already donated (you know who you are) - thanks.

DaC is looking for help. As most people know, we've had a bunch of problems lately. At the moment DarkUnderlord is the only coder about aside from Calis who helps out in emergencies (if it weren't for him I wouldn't be able to make this news post).

So, whilst we're open to offers of help on any area of the site, what we could use right now is another coder who can work with PHP, MySQL, phpbb (especially with the upcoming phpbb 3.0 which is going to require some work to get us upgraded...), and so on. There's not that much work to do, the main thing will be to fix bugs and occasionally update our systems. What is required really is some dedication to the site, ability to do the code, and being around relatively frequently.

If you think you can help, let us know either in a reply here or in PM.
