The zombie apocalypse continues [ Film & TV -> Update ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Fri 25 Aug 2006, 4:50 PM
More info on Film & TV: Diary of the Dead | More info on Person: George Romero

We don't cover many movies here at DaC, but screw it. George Romero is great. And it's just been announced that he's working on the 5th film in the zombie-apocalypse '... of the dead' series, which started in the 1960s with Night of the Living Dead. This one's called, somewhat lamely, Diary of the Dead:

The dead are rising again.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that horror maven George A. Romero has signed on to write and direct "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," the latest sequel to his 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead."

With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches.

After going more than two decades without making an independently financed zombie film, Romero told his production partner Peter Grunwald he was frustrated working within the system. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he said.

It's not clear on whether this is a direct sequel or something of a spin off, but I don't care that much: nobody does zombies munching on brains like George Romero.

Part 2 of Fallout revisited [ Person -> Interview ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Fri 25 Aug 2006, 3:19 PM
More info on Person: Avellone, Chris

There's a new interview with Chris Avellone at Gamebanshee as part of their 3-day Fallout party thing. A lot of it is dedicated to Van Buren, which we've all heard enough of (apart from Gamebanshee it seems), and he also continues the worrying trend he's had of recent years of showing he doesn't seem to get what Fallout was about anyway.

GB: Were any of you at Obsidian interested in acquiring the rights to Fallout 3 when they became available? What was your reaction to the news that Interplay had sold the rights to Bethesda Softworks?

Chris: I don't think it was ever an option that ever came up (I think it was offered to much higher bidders than we could hope to be) - and Bethesda totally works for me. Oblivion kicked a great deal of ass.

GB: Why do you suppose Interplay retained the rights to any massively multiplayer Fallout titles? Do you think we'll ever see such a game, and if so, would a Fallout MMORPG even work?

Chris: I have no idea, but I think it would totally work, though.

GB: If you were given the choice, would you like to see Obsidian pursue a post-apocalyptic RPG in the same vein as the Fallout series? Why or why not?

Chris: Nope, I'd rather we do something brand new that builds on the RPG mechanics and aesthetic style guides of that and other Interplay RPGs to create something that's better than Fallout. If it's post-apocalyptic, so be it, but it doesn't have to be similar to Fallout.

MMORPG Fallout, and Bethesda being great for Fallout because Oblivion kicked ass? I've said it before, but I'll say it again: I'm glad Obsidian didn't get the rights, and the company appears to be less than the sum of its parts.

Fallout Revisited for 3 days at Gamebanshee [ Game -> Editorial ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Thu 24 Aug 2006, 11:16 AM
More info on Game: Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game

The title says it all really. Gamebanshee have decided to do a 3-day special on Fallout. Today's is an interview with Wasteland designer Ken St. Andre and an interview with Fallout Tactics Lead Designer Ed Orman. From the Wasteland interview:

GB: Do you consider Fallout to be the spiritual successor to Wasteland? Why or why not?

Ken: No opinion. I never played Fallout.

I found that pretty funny. Ironically, I never played Wasteland, so TOUCHE!

Thanks for the news tip, baby arm of Tacticular Cancer.

Slow news - mutants repelled [ Community -> Update ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Mon 21 Aug 2006, 4:00 PM

There's not much news to post so I thought I'd let you know about the mutant that's just been killed in Maine.

Michelle O'Donnell of Turner spotted the animal near her yard about a week before it was killed. She called it a "hybrid mutant of something."

"It was evil, evil looking. And it had a horrible stench I will never forget," she told the Sun Journal of Lewiston. "We locked eyes for a few seconds and then it took off. I've lived in Maine my whole life and I've never seen anything like it."

They need to narrow that description down, currently it could be any number of people who post here.

WARNING: Fallout: 0 May Be Virus [ Game -> Update ]
Posted by King of Creation | Related News Items Sat 12 Aug 2006, 12:30 AM
More info on Game: Fallout 0: A Post Nuclear Mobile Phone Game

Thanks to Kharn for pointing out that Fallout: 0, the mobile phone game we reported on a few days ago, may contain a trojan horse.

There is trjojanhorse in that fallout 0 jar file...Allegedly the file contains the Redbrow.A virus. A pretty nasty one, since it starts sending premium rate SMS-messages.

The author of the game dismisses those threats:
It's because of the /FW string in the manifest. It's absolutely harmless.

So disable your antivirus for a while, if you're not afraid of the '*.jar' files

Fallout 0: A Post Nuclear Mobile Phone Game [ Game -> Article ]

More info on Game: Fallout 0: A Post Nuclear Mobile Phone Game

Cabal has let me know about a mobile phone game that he has created based on the Fallout series. It's called Fallout 0: A Post Nuclear Mobile Phone Game.

Betrayed, alone and with nothing to loose, our hero leaves on a journey to travel the wasteland, not knowing that he is the only one to ever make it out of Vault-7 alive. It seems as if there isn't a single soul in the world exept for him. But so it may seem, for there are others, who too struggle to survive. And far away something dark is lurking in the shadows... Something... watching and waiting.

I haven't been able to play it, but it looks decent, especially for a mobile phone game. Give it a try and then tell us what you think!

EDIT: VIRUS ALERT: Fallout 0 may, in fact, contain a virus. You can still grab it here at your own risk.

Fallout d20 Updates [ Game -> Update ]
Posted by King of Creation | Related News Items Fri 04 Aug 2006, 2:56 PM
More info on Game: Fallout d20

Gluttoncreeper has posted some Fallout d20 updates to the Duck and Cover forums. He clears up a little bit about what we can expect regarding races and classes in the PnP game:

Fallout PnP: d20 Guide details Humans, Ghouls, and Mutants for starting races with background options. We will be using a dual classless system. There will be two classless option to choose from (aggressive and non-aggressive) that determines Base Attack, Save bonuses, Hit Die, and so on. Backgrounds, Occupations, Race and Tag! determines class skills. All characters get a background and may choose to take a occupation. Traits are present with all of the classics from Fallout, as well as many more new options.

In addition the Fallout d20 team appears to be moving along at a quick pace. Glutton Creeper Games is already calling for playtesters:

Week 5 and the developers have produced nearly 100 pages of unedited text, just in the first four chapters (Character Creation, Skills, Feats, and Equipment). Once these four chapters are reviewed, test playing will begin. This will likely start in late August/September and end roughly 4 weeks later. If you have a group interesting in test playing the Fallout PnP d20 submit your group interest to gluttoncreeper@gluttoncreeper.com

Count me in.

Darksynth Mod [ Mod -> Preview ]
Posted by King of Creation | Related News Items Mon 31 Jul 2006, 10:50 PM

New forum member Darksynth has let us know about a Fallout mod that she's supposedly been working on for almost 5 years now. It's called Darksynth: Days of Destruction. Here's what she had to say:

Greetings as leader of darksynth@productions I am happy to say that afther 4/5 years our mod is almost done!! The demo will be launched in september 2006. The mod(darksynth_days of destruction) is based on fallout 3. It has 400 new items with their own images. There are 30/32 main maps(cities) and submaps, and 12 new special locations also known as special encounters. Everyting is new, people enemies etc.

I can only assume English is not this person's first language, due to the typos and grammatical error on the website. Also, it appears that there is some dubious content on the website...like how she supposedly interviewed someone at Bethesda who makes a definite claim about Fallout 3's release date, and that one of the Darksynth team members has played the "Fallout 3 demo". Anyways, you're welcome to go to Darksynth's website and do whatever. Toodleoo!

EDIT: Since I posted this, and basically called BS on the Darksynth team's Fallout 3 claims, they removed mentions of viewing the Fallout 3 demo (which the team leader now claims was really a screenshot) and the "interview" which the team leader now says never happened, and that she is very disappointed with her team member who made it up. Ehue ehue.

Fallout 3 rumourmill - the inevitable, or more non-news [ Game -> Update ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Fri 28 Jul 2006, 8:46 PM
More info on Game: Fallout 3 | More info on Company: Bethesda Softworks

I don't normally post up rumours that some guy heard from someone else whose girlfriend got from her hairdresser's cousin, but this particular rumour I've heard independantly from multiple people. Bear in mind it is a rumour, but I'd say it's a fairly reliable one, and it's now leaking onto message boards (see VDweller's post at NMA) so I figured I'd post it up.

What I've heard is what we all know was bound to happen anyway - that Bethesda have locked some of Fallout 3's features, namely, its combat (that won't be turnbased) and its viewpoint (that isn't isometric). Like I said, the stuff we knew was coming, but still kind of sucks.

That's all.

Word From Pete Hines [ Game -> Update ]
Posted by King of Creation | Related News Items Fri 28 Jul 2006, 2:34 AM
More info on Person: Pete Hines | More info on Company: Bethesda Softworks | More info on Game: Fallout 3

I was talking with Pete Hines about the whole hullabaloo over the Fallout 3 production status and whether or not Fallout 3 was out of pre-production. He wanted me to relay the following to you:

Suffice it to say that we have been adding people to the project over the last few months and will continue to do so going forward. Beyond that, we aren't ready to talk about what we're up to or what stage we're in or when we'll be ready to talk. The game is being worked on, that's for sure.

I've taken what he's said to mean that Fallout 3 isn't in what we might think of as pure pre-production or full-blown production. I guess what I've determined is that it's in a sort of limbo between the two. So take from that what you will. Work is being done on the game...that's all I care about.

Update: Fallout 3 leaves pre-production - not really [ Game -> Update ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Tue 25 Jul 2006, 12:39 PM
More info on Game: Fallout 3

I've been told that this month's PC Gamer had a mini-interview with Bethesda and was told that Fallout 3 has been 2 months in development as of E3 2006. I don't have a transcript of this yet, so if anyone feels like going down to the store and finding this, be my guest.

Update: Thanks to Briosafreak for pointing out a scan of (what probably is) this article at NMA. Seems the text isn't as clear as the guy who told me made out.

Project Phoenix update!!! [ Community -> Update ]

Lolz, I kid. Actually Evog has let us know about a neat video that is worth the download.

For those chicken shit to open the file, its a first person account of nuclear devastation(not sure if its partial or full CG), with "The Dead Flag Blues" narrated over the visuals which are quite good, and enhanced greatly by the monologue.

So if you're bored, this may prove to be an interesting diversion.
