Hellgate London is a FP/Action RPG, being developed by Flagship Studios which will take place in a modern London that has become infested with Demons. They say it will be as if someone merged Diablo II and Doom III, to form one interesting, yet dark action RPG...

"Setting: Modern day London, with a post-apocalyptic twist
The game is set in a demon infested London, 5 years after an epic battle between the demons and the human race. Guess who won. London was chosen because of it's "natural dungeons" such as subways, aqueducts, and left over bomb shelters from WWII. And yes, that was St. Paul's Cathedral in that concept art piece
."

It seems pretty interesting... They state that they will use a "skill system" which they claim is similar to the one used in Diablo II, for gaining character perks & such, so it won't be a matter of who's faster with a mouse or more accurate, etc.

You can read a new preview of Restricted Area at Gameguru Mania, in the form of an interview with Jan Beuck, the game's Creative Director.
GGMania: The press release claims that the game will feature "Uncountable number of weapons, Cyberware and Bioware to boost your abilities". Could you provide us more details about it? Could you describe the combat system?

Jan Beuck: There are more than 2.000.000.000 weapons - without cyberware or bioware! I guess that can be called uncountable. ;-)
The combat system is realtime and plays much like Diablo 2, but faster.

Faster than Diablo 2? I thought the speed of light was a universal limit.

It looks like STALKER has passed on the responsibility of most-previews-per-second to Auto Assault: Gamespot is the latest site to write up their thoughts on the game. They examine the human faction:
Modern humans take every precaution to avoid the effects of "the alien contamination." Shields cover their towns, vehicles, and personnel. Clothing design is utilitarian. Due to their purist social nature, humans revere the human form, and social status is greatly influenced by physical stature. Genetic engineering and subverted alien technology have helped the humans fight off the alien contamination, but these sciences have also produced the side effects of increased strength, eyesight, agility, and (sometimes) strange mental powers. These traits are only recognized as proof of the excellence of the pure human genetic line. Both mutants and biomeks are regarded as vile, disgusting perverts that revel in misshaping the glorious and perfect human form. The humans' central and most common belief is that true humanity must be preserved at any cost.

NMA mailed Leonard Boyarsky to get some clarification on their post-apocalyptic game demos. They asked how many PA games were in development or something, and here's the reply:
There were two different demos - the one you've seen was using our own engine. We did another one with the HL2 engine (using the same avatar and robot but with a Vampire 1st/third person camera) where we took the Gargoyle's AI from Vamp and gave it to the robot so you could fight him.
It obviously wasn't enough for a publisher. As always, there's probably more to the story than we know.

After six months of inactivity, the post-apocalyptic anime game Abaddon has recieved its second update in two weeks.

Hello again, I have uploaded a new copy of Abaddon, dubbed 0.4 beta, which is really just the new artwork I have done, as I havent reinstalled Visual Studio since my last computer crash!

The game is heavily influenced by Fallout... and anime, so if you like either or both of those things, it's worth a download, especially since it's completely free.

You can get some more in-game footage for the post-apocalyptic MMORPG Auto Assault on 3D Gamers. It's 11 MB, but if you don't want to download it (like me), I'll tell you what it will most likely consist of:
  • Heavy rawk soundtrack - if no rawk is immediately available, use some techno;
  • blow shit up;
  • use flamethrowers to blow shit up;
  • babes;
  • thongs.

Leonard Boyarsky has been interviewed about Troika's demise at Gameanshee. One of the most interesting parts from a post-apocalyptic point of view:
GB: Was there any interest in your post-apocalyptic tech demo? If you don't mind me asking, what sort of pitch/demo were you doing with the Half Life 2 engine?

Leon: We had some initial interest in our post apocalyptic game, but it was felt that it would have taken too long a dev cycle to develop the engine and then the game. We were hoping to do it in conjunction with another project with the same publisher to offset the development costs of the engine, but that deal fell through somewhere in the executive realm of the company we were talking to. The strangest thing for us was that we were in contact with a lot of development people who really wanted to work with us - producers, etc, but marketing and the execs are real wary of RPGs.

We had two different demos we did with the HL2 engine. One was post apocalyptic and the other was more contemporary, kind of a follow up to Vampire (in terms of game mechanics, etc, but not the license) where we focused on what worked in Vampire and threw away what didn't.

So this means there were two post-apocalyptic games planned, by the looks of it.

Leonard also mentions how he and the other founders are still unemployed. Surely someone other than the gamers must recognise the talent here?

You can now view the flash-heavy UK site for the Hitchhiker's Guide film. To me it feels in keeping with the spirit of the books, and I feel the music is suited to the material. Even Marvin's head isn't looking that bad.

The post-apocalyptic zombie horror film Land of the Dead has spawned a new movie company called Chiller Films. I'm not 100% sure what this means, but I think essentially the people working on the film liked each other so much that they decided to make their own movie company together. Reacting to a seemingly endless audience appetite for horror films, Mark Canton's Atmosphere Entertainment has teamed with Relativity Media to form Chiller Films.

Canton and Relativity principal Ryan Kavanaugh will head the venture, which will finance and produce several films per year with a $20 million budget cap.

Chiller grew out of the production of the George Romero-directed zombie pic "Land of the Dead," which recently wrapped. Universal will release it in October while Exception Wild Bunch handles overseas rights.

Relativity's Kavanaugh and Lynwood Spinks put the financing in place for the film after Atmosphere set Romero and his partner Peter Grunwald for the pic.

"After we unearthed the horror master, we seemed to come upon an endless number of opportunities for films in the horror genre," Canton said. "If anything, the market is expanding."

I think Land of the Dead is going to be one of the films of the year; you can't do much wrong combing zombies with social commentary.

In other movie news, Fallout narrator Ron Pearlman says that he's going to be shooting Hellboy 2 this Autumn/Fall. The first one was kind of fun to watch.

Since it's a slow news day, here's the real reason why Squar, Milner, Reehel & Williamson LLP, Interplay's former accounting firm, jumped ship, as revealed by a March 16th SEC filing.
MATERIAL WEAKNESS - LACK OF SUFFICIENT ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL

We noted that the Company began losing most of its personnel beginning in June 2004 through layoffs and resignations. Well before September 30, 2004, substantially all accounting department personnel, except for the controller, had departed the Company. Additionally, most other Company personnel that the Company's accounting department interacts with to provide information necessary to produce timely and accurate financial statements had also departed the Company well before September 30, 2004. While we were able to overcome this internal control deficiency in order to complete our interim review, we believe that this internal control deficiency rises to the level of a material weakness in the financial reporting process for the Company.
So basically, they left because everyone else was already gone and it seemed like the cool thing to do. You can read the whole filing here.

Redliner, one of the organisers of the Fallout LARP in Czechoslovakia (not the same as Kamaz's Lavian Fallout LARP), dropped by our forums to soothe worries about the alarming speed of LARP growth across eastern Europe. Here's some of what he had to say:
So about the game. smile Like the PC and paper games, you can DIE. smile But only "in game" so you can respawn and play again(after few minutes). icon_wink Here are allowed two types of weapons. Airsoft guns (usually a plastic replicas of real guns that shoot plastic projectiles) and close fight weapons (like stick, baton, staff or knife). They are of course just imitation made of wood or platic. But it still hurts a bit smile So there is nothing like "I shoot you! Now you are death!". Because if someone hits or shoots you, you usually know it. icon_mrhappy But this is not for kids. Some of us are quiet good at some martial arts or other fighting systems with weapons (like Escrima). So it could be somethimes really serious. On the other side there are some borders that everyone must keep in mind. To avoid serious injury. To defeat someone doesn't mean to cripple him. icon_mrhappy (But just to hit with apropriate power. icon_wink ) But it's open to everyone who wants to join us and it's not so difficoult to fight (you can still shoot icon_wink ).

Paul Anderson to ruin Death Race 2000 [ Film & TV -> Update ]

Paul W.S. Anderson, the same Nazi asshole who managed to skullfuck Alien vs. Predator, and crap out one Resident Evil clone after another, got his claws on the Death Race 2000 remake. The 1975 version starred David Carradine, Sylvester Stallone, and other people who probably regret ever reading the script. It's a fun B movie that inspired the Carmageddon series and much of GTA.
"The original was so much about decimating pedestrians that the actual race was almost irrelevant, and I want to restore that," Anderson said. "Set in 2020, ours is an ultraviolent, no-holds-barred race with heavily armed Escalades, Ferraris and Aston Martins"
Anderson's take is rumoured to star Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner. Don't worry, he'll force a futuristic SWAT team and aliens in there somehow. Read on.

Indianos has sent word of a new Fallout Tactics Campaign, that is in the works; it looks as if it's shaping up quite nicely. Here's what Indianos has to say about it...

"My name is INDIANOS and I intend to make a New Campaign for Fallout Tactics with new materials, like new Tiles, New sprites and new maps. I will try to make all the maps free with many quests like fallout, fallout 2.
If I don't find the free time that is necessary in order to complete my project, I will only publish the new tiles ,sprites.
Now regard to the maps , I will publish them as campaign and perhaps as single player
."

Atmosphere will be created with this ambient music. I think there will be an option to turn it off.
