I got this sent from Bethesda today. My response was, WTF?
March 31, 2005 (Rockville, MD) -- Bethesda Softworks® is pleased to announce that we have hired the talents of Obsidian Entertainment® to develop and design a Fallout® sequel. The return of this exceptional series is aimed at the core fans of Fallout®, because the company are confident that the game's appeal will extend to a much broader audience. "In this day when good role-playing games are rare, our releases of Fallout 3® and Fallout 4® promise to deliver what gamers have been yearning to play for ages", said Todd Howard, Bethesda®'s Executive Producer. "While we wanted to make Fallout 3® our own game, we thought that the previous, cancelled attempt at it was a great idea, so we're finally giving the Obsidian® team a chance to finish it."
Howard continued, "As fellow gamers and fans of the Fallout series, we are fortunate to have the talents of the original developers of Fallout and Fallout 2 creating a worthy sequel to Fallout and we are confident that Obsidian Entertainment will deliver a game that will be remembered for years to come."
The sequel to Fallout 3, previously codenamed "Van Buren" during its development at Interplay Entertainment® is to resume development at Obsidian Entertainment under the currently given title of "Fallout 4", which may be subject to change. The game is to be produced by Bethesda Softworks LLC (www.bethsoft.com), a Zenimax Media (www.zenimax.com) company.
I'll try and get more news on this. It seems completely out of the blue to me, though I guess it puts Feargus Urquhart's acquisition of the original texture sets for the Fallout games in a different light. Did he get the Van Buren stuff as well?

... and you can read it on Yahoo! Games Domain. They don't seem to be targeting the Fallout variety of post-apocalyptic fan:

Because Auto Assault is targeted towards the mainstream gamer, NCsoft has made a number of design decisions that simplify gameplay to focus on ease of play and a low learning curve. Movement is a basic keyboard setup and the weapons are aimed with the mouse. Guns will auto-track once a target is selected and if you can align the two targeting cones on one victim, your chance to hit will go up. The basic weapons will also never run out of ammo.

"You're free to shoot all you want," said Brown. "We wanted to go with more fun than reality."

The last time I heard a mainstream post-apocalyptic game hyped was for Brotherhood of Steel. The amount of leather-bikini wearing women in the Auto Assault screenshots allow for further comparison. At least this isn't using the Fallout name.

Bethesda have posted a new job opportunity on their website: a Level Designer. You get to work on Fallout 3!

Design, create, build, and script levels for future Elder Scrolls and Fallout products. Includes working in our proprietary toolset to design, build, light, and script game areas.

Candidate should have:

  • Excellent sense of 3D game space and gameflow.
  • Experience with designing, building, and populating game levels.
  • Experience scripting or programming complex interactivity.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Architectural design experience a plus.
  • Experience with 3D Studio Max a plus.
  • Experience with The Elder Scrolls Construction Set a plus.
  • Knowledge of Role Playing games and The Elder Scrolls or Fallout a plus.
  • Game industry experience a plus.
I don't want to labour the point but it's known the Troika people are out of a job. I guess a fan can dream.

The latest newsletter for the post-apocalyptic MMORPG Fallen Earth has been sent out to special people. It basically says the game is doing great:

A good part of our time has been spent on speed optimizations and we are pretty happy with the performance. We have increased the frame rate by three fold in the last two months and there are still some improvements we are hoping to ring-out.

In addition to optimizations, we have spent much of our time on polishing the game and that is an ongoing process. There are still a number of features we want to add and gameplay issues we want to improve, and we are diligently working our way through them.

This is just a sample of what we have worked on. We could say more, but we feel we would ruin some really exciting surprises coming down the road... so it's best that we stop here for now and reserve some for the coming news...

There's also a link to a video of some gameplay footage, with I think is OK to link to here as the newsletter is public. So you can download the 60 MB video here.

~ Changes the wave to correct format
~ Generates a LIP file
~ Doubles the speed of wav

The camera settles on two men, one slim, tall, dark-haired and good-looking and holding a microphone, the other stocky and powerful, older with a regal mien and bearing.
"Lance Mather's here in the foyer of Luxury Haven Number Three, Heavenly Haven. With me is Chip Howell, founder of the Howell Luxury Haven Company."
Mathers: "Quite an impressive entryway you have here, Mr Howell. Are those Gatling Gun Turrets?"
Howell: (grins broadly) "Gatling Laser Turrets, Lance. Remember you aren't talking to Chucky here."
Mathers: "Ah, you mean your competitor, Charles Morton's Vault Tec..."
Howell: "You are calling Chucky a competitor, Lance? The guy is building vaults. Do you know what a vault is---It's a goddamn tomb is what it is... a place you bury people..."
Mathers: "Please Mr. Howell..."
Howell: "We are building Havens Mathers! (raises both hands above his head) Not just refuges from the world's cares, but luxurious havens prepared for every eventuality!"

The post-apocalyptic truck driving game ExMachina is the subject of a new interview with Svetlana Tchestnikh of Targem (the game's developer). It's not that detailed, but considering we know very little about the game, all the information is new.

Computer Games - What other gameplay elements in ExMachina do you consider to be important?

Svetlana Tchestnikh - Besides driving and fighting, you will have to earn money to keep your truck up to date. That's where the trade element comes in. Dozens of towns and villages varying in technological development level will offer you all sorts of goods. You'll be able to sell loot or buy yourself some new gadgets there. Also, there will be mini-games, where you will have to race with other cars, fight in exotic conditions, find the way out of the labyrinth and more.

I've recently sent off some questions to the company which they've agreed to answer, so look out for that on DaC soon. There's not enough information on the game to make an informed opinion on its quality, but at least it sounds different...

The corpse of Interplay somehow still roams the earth, it's lifeless puppet strings manipulated by the diabolical Frechman Herve Caen. Frymuchan, from the Raging Bull Investor Forums, has been in contact with the necromancer.
I found out from Herve Caen himself that Interplay is going to be appointing new auditors in the next couple of days and that earnings will be delayed because of that. It is reassuring to me just to hear back from him and to hear that he has an auditing committee who is reviewing getting new auditors.
What kind of twisted experiments does he want to subject the rotting carcass of Interplay to now?

The Douglas Adams Continuum posted news of Yahoo's, Guide to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which is narrated by Stephen Fry. The guide contains plenty of useful information and should make for a fun time.

Also, at Engadget you can check out a dissected Babel Fish...

"The unlikelihood of the fishes extraordinarily useful existence is also used in the stories as an absolute proof of the non-existence of God - an explanation probably inspired by Adams, like the rest of us at some point in our lives, being subjected by the dubious argument that the eye is such a thing of wonder that it proves Gods existence."

I always thought the Babel Fish gave a more interesting reason for aliens understanding each other, than some of the other Sci-Fi books and TV shows.

I've been looking at our downloads and realise that whilst we offer fast downloads, we don't actually have many files. Anyone who knows about mods, Fallout files, sprites, tiles, save game converters, patches, and so on, with access to FTP (which rules out a lot of university firewalls), want to help out by being our official Downloads Manager? There's a new patch out for the German version of The Fall.
A new patch for the German version of 'The Fall - Last Days of Gaia' can be found at Gamers Hell, taking the game to v1.7. Two files are available: a steup-up from v1.65 (17.5Mb) and the full patch (39.66Mb).
You can get the patch here. I, for one, would rather have an English version of the game.

There are a bunch of post-apocalyptic mod updates that someone might be interested in. The obligatory 'we're not dead' news comes from Blue Moon Rising, along with some MP3s from their soundtrack.

Warriors of the Apocalypse also has an update showing some renders of dogs.

Zombie Panic says they're not dead.

Finally, the Morrowind-Fallout mod Ashes of the Apocalypse has added some wallpapers to their frontpage, and a new team member to their group. He's called Entorwellian and I'm sure I've seen him in #fallout. Hmm.

Some more fiction from the Auto Assault universe has been added to the game's homepage. Here's a quote:

Enter the conspiracists. Feeding off the public's fear and suspicion, the conspiracists pushed varied agendas - legitimate or otherwise - as far as they could go. Anything and everything was fair game. Governments were the problem; secret conspiracies lay behind the mutations; it was the punishing "Hand of God;" the results of mysterious cosmic rays; nature's revenge; or even the prelude to an alien invasion force.

When the leading governments denied that the plainly visible mutations were occurring, Dr. Samson Templetus, PhD, led a respected vocal charge decrying governmental leadership. Though researchers later failed to verify his credentials, Templetus pelted the world with conspiracies layered within conspiracies, one after the other, like a peeling onion with no end. He claimed governments were hiding the facts, were unable to check the spread of the mutations and were failing to protect the public. Templetus' visibility did nothing to ease the public mind.

I find the absence of the game's main theme from the story - girls in tight leather shorts - disturbing, but am sure it will be rectified when the next set of screenshots come out.

I've heard rumours of this, but it's the first time I've seen the mod itself... Ashes of Apocalypse mods Morrowind into a post-apocalyptic setting. There's a lengthy update on the mod's progress on Morrowind Summit:
Hello all!

There is a great deal of new stuff going on at Clone Gaming Studios!

For those who are not yet aware of this futuristic total conversion by the creators of Sea Of Destiny mod, here is a short summary: Early on in the twenty-first century the nuclear overcast mankind lived in constant balance with for nearly 100 years, got unleashed onto the face of the earth. Nations became so blind with hatred they pulverized the face of our planet with lies, bribes, false accusations, and their hard set fists. Yet somehow after all that fallout mankind stumbled out of the ashes into what one might call, a sort of renascence. Societies rebuilt themselves into shining metropolitan cities of light and promise. Technological advancements reached forth from the fables of yesterday into hover pads, medical regeneration, magnion powered clean generators of tomorrow and others. ...but nothing lasts forever, and sure enough in 2069 resources ran ever so thin granting an opening to what became known as the two year Radion Wars.. Countless cities fell under , crushed to dust under the heel of radion cluster bombs. With an uneasy peace reached in 2072 you discover yourself on the boarder of the Northern California Republic territories. The NCR is fighting to keep itself afloat in the aftermath of several recently large terrorist attacks on several of its Barrier cites. Wastelanders cannot be trusted , and neither the chivalrous seeming Mercenary Guild. The world hangs together by a string, pick a side, decide the fate of the wastelands!

We have gotten a fairly good team together over the last couple months. All these people have worked hard together to assemble a total conversion with an entirely different storyline and 100% custom meshes, models, armor, guns and vehicles. We do how ever still have many openings in Clone Gaming Studios. Come apply at our forums. It is a very easy and simple process.

Progress is going smoothly on an awesome cinematic trailer for all to see. It will be assembled using existing in-game models, as well as in-game recordings of the progress. As soon as its done the movie will appear in our sites download section.

Decisions have been made in the leadership to release the first version of Ashes Of Apocalypse as soon as errors, and bugs are smoothed out. We will be rolling on open end development, in which the mod will grow through monthly updates downloadable at our site. Anyone can sign up at our forums during that time and give us plenty of ideas on what you would like to see in this total conversion. That feedback in turn will be evaluated and most likely appear in the game. After all you are the gamers, shouldn't you have the opportunity to decide what you would like to see in the gaming world?

Lastly our site is now finished and will be regularly updated with development news pictures, and lore from the Ashes of Apocalypse world. All of this great stuff can be found at clone.ufrealms.net/aoa.

It looks interesting, but I've searched their website but can't see one mention of Fallout, despite the mod appearing to lift the setting - not to mention the town names - from the game. Maybe it's because... of the copyright issues involved in using Morrowind Fallout when Bethesda is doing that game? I KID, I KID! icon_mrhappy
