Land of the Dead gets more money [ Film & TV -> Update ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Fri 08 Apr 2005, 3:26 PM
More info on Film & TV: Land of the Dead | More info on Person: George Romero

In some surprising (and positive) news, a somewhat niche movie - George Romero's zombie apocalypse, Land of the Dead - has been granted more money by its distributor after Romero stormed off set in frustration on the last day of shooting. Bloody-Disgusting report,

Time to gush with joy because I've got some big big news for you all! After losing the battle and storming off the set on the last day of shooting, it looks as if George Romero has won the war. I've just been informed that Universal is so happy with Romero's Land of the Dead that they've given him more money to do some (what I've been told) "extremely necessary" reshoots. I cannot tell you specifically what, but I can say I've heard some incredibly optimistic things about Romero's fourth zombie pic and it's said to become "even better." More news in the coming weeks. Land, which may see an earlier release date, stars Simon Baker, Robert Joy, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Pedro Miguel Arce, Krista Bridges, Eugene Clark, Boyd Banks, Asia Argento and many more.

This is one of the films I'm most anticipating this year.

What you missed.... [ Game -> Update ]

More info on Mod: Warriors of the Apocalypse | More info on Person: Scott Brown | More info on Game: S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadows of Chernobyl | More info on Mod: Gehenna | More info on Game: Auto Assault

Whilst DaC was out, some major news broke. Oh, wait, it didn't. Still, for those that like this sort of thing:

The Warriors of the Apocalypse mod has been updated with some very pretty concept art (1 and 2);

There's a new HL2 mod called Gehenna - as usual, pretty webpage, lack of content (credit: NMA);

A new 28 MB Auto Assault trailer at Worthplaying (babes, leather, shit gets blown up, etc.) (credit: NMA);

Some stupid STALKER facts, including:

You can not go prone, but when you crouch, you can press shift and crouch lower!

If you come too close to a burning trash can, you can fry yourself.

(insert joke here, include the word vapourware and use humourous cynicism);

And finally, more Auto Assault hype in the form of a Gamespot preview, a cover feature in a magazine called Boulder County, and a new Q&A with Scott "Scorch" Brown at OnRPG. From the GS preview:

In hazard mode, Biomek vehicles transform into robotic juggernauts of destruction. Typically, this takes the form of a mechanized walker. The hazard mode is controlled via a computer chip--known as a transformation chip--installed in the vehicle's hazard-kit hard point. The transformation chip dictates how the vehicle will transform and what capabilities will be available to it. Hazard-mode walker meks are capable of mass destruction through the use of their main gun and secondary weapons. In addition, any opponent foolish enough to get point-blank with a mek will likely get stomped underfoot with melee damage. When hazard mode concludes, the mek transforms back into the original vehicle.

I know I've attacked this game in the past, but all is forgiven. YOU GET TO PLAY A TRANSFORMER.

News related to Top Story: Wikipocalypse Launch | More info on Community: Wikipocalypse

Well that was fun. The wiki's are now online and operational. Duck and Cover now has three wiki's which you can all participate in. They include The Vault which is the wiki for all your Fallout needs. Second up is Krypta which is the Polish version of the Vault. You can thank Ausir for that (and the quite large Polish Fallout community as well). You'll notice a few of the images are missing but we'll upload them within the next couple of days.

Finally, it is with great pleasure that I announce the birth of the long-awaited Wikipocalypse. This wiki is DAC's database of Post-Apocalyptic information. Games, Films, Books, Music... whatever we can even remotely call Post-Apocalyptic will be added to the Wikipocalypse. Those 'more info on' links that have been appearing above the news posts now all point to entries within the Wikipocalypse. You can now click on those to find out more info on something or, if the information isn't there (like it is at the moment), add some content in to get the ball rolling.

Eventually the Wikipocalypse will be themed, if possible so that it looks like the rest of DAC. In the mean-time, it's open for business though so feel free to edit any existing entries or add in all the post-apocalyptic stuff that's missing.

DAC is back and JJTek Hosting Sucks [ Community -> Update ]
Posted by DarkUnderlord | Related News Items Fri 08 Apr 2005, 6:14 AM

Now that I've finished re-installing the news database, Duck and Cover is open for business once again. Our hiatus for the past two days was because JJTek Hosting (our former hosts) are stupid. Initially, I contacted JJTek about the databaase errors people were getting in the forums re the "common word list" and "MYSQL_BIG_SELECTS". A similar error was preventing me from doing a complete database backup. In response, I received this e-mail:

From: "JJTEK Hosting"
To: "DarkUnderlord"
Subject: copyrighted material
Date: Mon, 4 Apr 2005 13:27:26 +0100

You have been breaking our terms and conditions by using your site for file distribution.

We need your agreement that you will remove all the copyrighted material from your site. This includes all the video files (the Hitchhiker's movie trailer, everything in /downloads/trailers, etc.), and everything in /downloads/patches.
Once you have agreed to remove them the account will be re-enabled.

Customer Services
JJTEK Hosting

Seeing as the subject was "copyrighted material" and not "Breach of contract" my initial thought was it was all about the fact we had the Hitchhiker's guide movie trailer available for download, though I wasn't sure. At this stage, access to the "downloads" directory on site had been disabled but the site still worked. I made a post about this in the Management Forum basically asking what we'd do about it.

I also sent an e-mail off to JJTek asking for clarification: Were they complaining about the copyright or the fact we had downloads at all. Not more than a couple of hours after that, the site was pulled offline, all of our access to FTP was disabled and people were re-directed to a "this account has been suspended" message. I then got this e-mail in response to my query:

I apologise for not making the issue clear to you.

The issue is that you have been breaking our terms and conditions by using your site for file distribution. File distribution is not permitted with our Enterprise account and this is clearly stated on our website. Please see under 'Unlimited Data Transfer'.

JJTek are allegeing that we had inadvertently breached our agreement with them by offering a handful of files for download and that that constituted a "download server". We wanted our downloads however and so by that stage, we'd decided to move to a host that would allow us to keep them. Mr Teatime sent an e-mail to JJTek:

Hi, I see now you have disabled Duck And Cover. I understand you had disabled the downloads due to concerns of copyright issues, then the next thing I saw, the site was down. I would appreciate it if you could enable ftp, ssh and sql so we can make dumps and transfer the site to a different host. Since we were unable to make full backups of the site previously as we were getting error messages (another member of staff emailed you about this recently), which were host related problems, we need the FTP access to be able to transfer the site fully.

Their reply half an hour later:

We need your confirmation that the offending files will be removed before we can enable the site. The downloads were disabled due to contravention of our terms and conditions as file distribution is not permitted on our Enterprise account.

Teatime e-mails JJTek again:

We'll remove all the files from the site as we have decided to move to a different host. We need FTP access to get access to the site, to transfer it to the new host. We don't need the public site reenabled, just the FTP and so on so that we can download all the content and transfer it to the new host. This shouldn't take that long - a few days at most - and we will delete everything from your FTP once it's been transfered. Please let me know when we can access the FTP again to do this...

Teatime also gave them a phone call... and here's the kicker. JJTek decide to pull some of the worst shit I've personally experienced a host do:

Further to your telephone call today, I am afraid we have now been advised that we would be breaking the law by allowing you to download the numerous copyrighted files you have placed on our server. This includes downloads using ftp. The files are not in one folder, but are in many different locations spread around within your site's root folder. We therefore have no alternative but to delete the whole site from our servers. We can leave your database on the server and allow you access to back it up once we have deleted the other files.

JJTek were unable to provide us with a list of these alleged "copyrighted files" beyond the trailers and (arguably) patches even though it appears to be clear that there were able to identify a substantial number of them. They then deleted all the code I had created (and which therefore I owned the copyright of) as well as everything else. Fan Fiction, Fan Art... the whole lot. Gone. Keep in mind that all of this happened over about a 12 hour period.

Needless to say that pissed the hell out of me and of Teatime. As far as I'm concerned, JJTek have also breached their own terms and conditions by failing to give us adequate written notice:

13.3.1 the other party commits a material breach of this Agreement and, in the case of a breach capable of being remedied, fails to remedy it within a reasonable time of being given written notice from the other party to do so;

I'm also pretty sure they've violated a law or two by deleting *our* content without permission and without due notice that they were going to do so.We are now being hosted by much more sensible people on Sorcerer's Place who actually used to host us before we made the horrifying mistake of moving to JJTek.

STALKER Updates [ Game -> Preview ]
Posted by King of Creation | Related News Items Tue 05 Apr 2005, 9:04 PM
More info on Game: S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadows of Chernobyl | More info on Company: GSC Game World
Oblivion Lost has been updated with some new STALKER material. STo start, they've posted a new calender page for their screenshot calender project.

They then have a transcript from the French STALKER fansite in which they spoke with THQ about the release of the game.
We have created silence which is respected by GSC, namely, in order to not name any release date yet. If you denounce that the game will hit stores in x months and then, one or two months beforehand, realise that this will not be the case, one is led to disappointment and frustration. Hence, we prefer not to say anything, complete the game, await the "gone gold"-announcement and then publish the game. The beta test, of course, is directly related to the timing of the development.
Lastly, the folks at Oblivion Lost have reported on GSC's presence at the Russian Game Developers Conference 2005.
Russian Game Developer Conference 2005 has just ended. GSC attended with Cossacks 2, and more importantly, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. demonstrated at its stand. Unfortunately GSC did not follow up on its promise to show off outdoor DX9 footage. On the upside is the fact that they did show a new build of the multiplayer. The graphics are beautiful, while the opinions on gameplay are split. See for yourself in our exclusive videos shot by SOKOL.
Note: The archive is compressed using 7-Zip. WinRar and 7-Zip can be used to decompress it.
This does a little to desuade my vapor fears, but with THQ denying to name a release date, I begin to lose hope. I'll equate it to this research paper I have to write. If the professor doesn't give me a release date, when do you think I'll do it? Probably at the end of the semester, or maybe never, since he didn't even specify that it was due at all. If you're in a business and you don't have set goals and waypoints for those goals, then I just don't know how you'd get anything accomplished.

If you like explosions, you might like these screenshots. You can view three new in-game images of Auto Assault at GameRifts. They leave me cold, because all these screenshots seem to show are not very pretty-looking flame effects rather than any unique or interesting gameplay features. Personally, I'd advise a different PR approach, but what do I know..

I Am Legend possibly going to start filming [ Film & TV -> Update ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Mon 04 Apr 2005, 2:21 PM
More info on Film & TV: I Am Legend
I'll admit from the start, I know very little about this film. I haven't seen any of the two film adaptions of the post-apocalyptic novel I Am Legend, and I haven't read the book. Bearing that in mind, I'll lift Aint It Cool's news post on the subject:
I AM LEGEND... Richard Matheson's brilliant work, twice adapted to screen thus far.... Once by Vincent Price (the best version) then most iconically by Charlton Heston. This third adaptation has been a thing of legend in its own right. From the adaptation by Mark Protosevich, which was nearly perfect save for the pandering ending required by Warner Brothers... It has seen different producers and directors as often as... well as Warner's own SUPERMAN. Well it looks like Francis Lawrence, director of CONSTANTINE, has finally tamed the beast. I'm hearing that Will Smith will star... which makes this his first foray into horror. He's fought Aliens and Robots... so why not Vampires. Personally, I can see this... but only if he gives himself over to the tragedy of the role. The melancholy of being the Last Man on Earth. Now, if they're planning on actually shooting this in New York.. that means a pretty huge scale for this. Both previous adaptations were in the more sprawling Los Angeles. Let's see where this goes, I just hope they've kept the books ending... after all, the title isn't I AM A LIVING LEGEND...
Just thought you should be aware - on the "Reel Jobs" section on the Mayor's office website of New York City, they've listed the Richard Matheson adaptation "I Am Legend" in need of a scout staff, aiming for a May 5th start date of actual *shooting*.
First I've heard of this - but hey, I'm looking forward to it.
- SR Hadden
So there you go. Has anyone seen the previous adaptions?

The cyberpunk Fallout clone, Omega Syndrome, has been updated to version 2.02. Here are the changes:
2ND APRIL 2005

Changes To Quests!
The demo has been altered. One area was clipped because it didn't have enough of a reason to be there and it hindered the game's flow. Another area had another quest and some little extras added to it.

New Ability For Reptoids!
The Reptoids have been given a new ability that makes them harder to kill. You'll have to play it to see what I mean.

If you already own OS and want to play VER 2.02, you have to download the latest versions of the Demo and Add On 1.

The game's fun. You can download the demo (which can be unlocked to the full version) here.

Some STALKER stuff [ Game -> Interview ]

A Czech interview with the intro and credits composer for STALKER, Markus Holler, is available at Bonusweb. Here's the translation, courtesy of Oblivion-Lost:
Q1) Hi Markus. At first, we would like to thank you for your time.
Classic question at the beginning. Who are you and how did you learn about the computer game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl?

My Name is Markus Holler, I live in Bingen / Germany and I composed the music for the intro and outro of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Q2) Why did you choose the Czech National Symphony Orchestra for recording
your music? (Editor's note: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was recorded with the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague.)

As it was sure that we'd get a real orchestra to work with on the music, we turned to people we had already worked with before. Due to the great recordings for the Merregnon 2 Soundtrack ( with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Böcker (he's the man who pulls the strings) organzied the recordings with the FILMharmonic
Orchestra for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., while I was busy with composing the music. The FILMharmonic Orchestra (consisting of the best players from Prague
Symphony, Czech National Symphony etc.) is very experienced with recording music for games - e.g. Splinter Cell, Brothers in Arms and EverQuest II have been recorded there.

Q3) Can we expect any fast music or something more slow and how many songs did you compose?

I wrote two tracks - intro and outro/credits in a total length of almost 10 minutes.

Q4) Is there any main theme song? I mean song which appears when something important is to happen?

There is definitely a main theme, yes. But I'm not involved in composing the
in-game music, so I can't say anything about the use of the main theme there.

I can't think of much to say, apart from what's been said before: the game feels like vapourware.

Combat in Oblivion - hints for Fallout 3? [ Game -> Preview ]
Posted by Mr. Teatime | Related News Items Sat 02 Apr 2005, 12:09 AM
More info on Person: Steve Meister | More info on Game: Fallout 3 (Bethesda) | More info on Company: Bethesda Softworks
Steve "MrSmileyFaceDude" Meister, one of Bethesda's programmers, sent word that he's written an article on ES: Oblivion's combat (which includes a picture of him looking very much like Warren Specter). We're constantly assured how different Oblivion and Fallout 3 will be, but some things I'm guessing will carry over. For instance...
And finally, combat need not be lethal. Any combatant - including the player -- can yield to their opponent. It's up to the opponent to accept the yield or not, but if they do accept, combat ends. It's a way to get out of those sticky situations where you find yourself in over your head. Just don't try it with a creature or with anyone who really, really hates you! And if an NPC yields to you, you make the call - walk away, or keep fighting.
This is a feature long-missing in most commercial RPGs, and I hope it makes its way in some form into Fallout 3.

More Auto Assault stuff [ Game -> Preview ]

More info on Game: Auto Assault | More info on Company: NetDevil
The latest Auto Assault newsletter has been sent out. Since it can't really be summarised any more than it is, I'll just paste:
Greetings from the Central Wastelands!

Here's a quick look at what's hot off the presses for Auto Assault this week.

- PC Gamer (available at your favorite bookstore or newsstand) is featuring a "hands-on" preview of Auto Assault in the May 2005 issue.

- The Daily Camera, Boulder County Colorado's signature newspaper, recently spoke with Scott "Scorch" Brown and Peter "Piza" Grundy. That article is available online (free registration required) at,1713,BDC_2427_3655772,00.html.

- Jive came back for a second helping of Q&A goodness with Scorch which you can read here:

- Yahoo! Games Domain is presenting a screenshot-packed look at Auto Assault available at

- GameDaily invites you to "take your love of vehicular homicide to the PC" in their in-depth preview:

On the official Auto Assault site, the Recon section ( has been updated to give a glimpse of "Legerdemain," a location whose discovery "is mystifying and, quite frankly, horrifying to the three races of Auto Assault."

Stop by the official forums and cast your vote for which of the three races - Biomek, Human, or Mutant - you're anxious to play first when you enter the world of Auto Assault. (Currently, the leading vote seems to indicate that people want to play them all!)

Have a great weekend and watch out for those pesky pranksters today who get way too much mileage out of April Fool's Day!

Speaking of April Fool's, I'm surprised so many people believed the one DaC and RPG Codex posted. Everyone knows Obsidian only does Bioware projects.
